Good mock and rationale, though. Good work; thanks for sharing!

I appreciate it. I don't think DL is a huge need right now, especially if Justin Smith comes back. But Baalke seems to always want to cover all options in case.

I do like the Dezmin Lewis idea (not a Funchess fan at all). I just don't think this year he'd be able to contribute. He reminds me of Brian Quick. That's not a knock on him either, think Quick is coming along nicely now for the Rams. Just seems like a guy who was bigger than everyone he played against at his level, so he didn't have to refine his game much. Think it'll take him a couple years, a la Brian Quick, to get in the groove of the NFL game. That's why I went with Lockett who could at least be dynamic in the return game.

Greenberry was the big WR I grabbed in my mocks to be a future RZ, big bodied WR we needed. He has a ton of potential, was rated #7 WR on rivals as a high schooler, 1 spot behind Amari Cooper. He fell victim to bad QB play (Houston actually started a 5'10 WR at QB most of the year). This was supposed to be his breakout year and it didn't happen. Think a year behind Boldin, he could be a very good player for us.

Lol I appreciate it. I try to think outside the box when I make mocks. Baalke is a wildcard and never gets guys we think he will. 75% of the mocks on here are the same guys recycled over and over. I just try and give a completely new perspective on my mocks.

It's much appreciated, looking at basically the same mock over and over again is boring as hell lol.

After looking at it over again, it isn't poo poo anymore. I'm actually starting to like it. It's definitely out of the box, though.

round 1:
I wouldn't be mad about this pick but OO at 3-4DE? Then he has to bulk up a lot imho. Would suit way better at Brooks' position.
If you really want to go DE, you are free to pick Carl Davis or Eddie Goldman who should be available here.

round 2:
Marpet is a project for now. But I'm ok with it.

round 3:
ok.

round 4a:
ok.

round 4b:
you don't think that we can get superior prospects at CB here?

round 5:
ok

round 6:
Would prefer Waller here.

round 7a:
ok.

round 7b:
ok.

I don't know about that one. Not a single di-line talent is taken in your mock (I don't care about UDFA at all) though we have a lot of questions there (Dockett, JSmith are old, other d-liners are solid but not more, Ian Williams seems to be injury-prone).

edit:
you have stated that the d-line is not a big need for now, especially if Justin comes back?
When should we draft a premier D-Liner then? Next year when everyone knows that we need one?
And should we pray that Dockett and Justin stay healthy this season? Dockett is coming from an ACL injury, Justin is 35 years old. Carradine showed some promising stuff but is still a question mark. TJE, Dial seem to be run-stuffers, Dorsey sucked at 34-DE in this league so far and Ian Williams is our NT, if he can stay healthy.
Now, if you really don't see a big need at the d-line despite these arguments, I will start a riot

I don't believe in "reaches", it's a silly term and what matter is how the player turns out. Pretty sure the Browns got high marks for getting "good value" when they drafted Brady Quinn @ #22....

I'll go back to what I initially said, I would not be completely opposed to drafting the UCLA kid with the intent of making him a stand-up pass rusher, he has rare size/athleticism for that position. He would be a "project" in the sense that he would have to transition to standing up and playing in space, but I think given his dimensions and athleticism, it's doable.

But asking him to play 3-4 DE with his frame is just not realistic. You ask a guy like Tank Carradine, who is 6-5, 270 lbs to do that because HE HAS THE FRAME to add on more weight, and the prototype length for the position.

6'3, 270 lbs is already incredibly bulky. When you ask guys with maxed out frames to add weight, their athleticism suffers. Now you are stuck with a short (for 5-technique standards), slowed down athlete.

Don't mind "reaching", don't mind "projects"... just don't like the idea with this particular player.

DL can definitely become an issue. That's why I picked Owamagbe first. Some see him as an OLB. But that's just based off athletic ability. His 12.5 career sacks shows you'd be hoping he becomes a big sack guy. At DE in our 3-4, his speed and power would cause headaches for OLinemen and free up Lynch and Smith. Plus in my opinion, he's probably the best run stopping Edge guy in the draft. Scouts wonder if he has the bend and flexibility to turn the corner as an Edge rusher. I still think we should add some weight to him, like we did Tank, and we'd have good bookends in our 3-4.

In regards to your other comments, do I think we can get superior CBs in the 4th? Who are you thinking could be there that could potentially be better than Lippett? Do I think he's a great CB right now? No. But he could be. We all want a Sherman type CB, what if he becomes that? In limited time, he's shown he can play some CB. He's already been doing DB drills in all pre-draft workouts also.

And Waller in the 6th is fine, WR are kind of like ice cream flavors to people. Some love certain guys, some hate certain guys, some have no opinion either way. I can see why Waller is intriguing with is size/speed combo. But a guy with less than a 1k career yards doesn't excite me. If you want a big GT receiver in the 6th, I'd rather go with DeAndre Smelter though.

I understand what you're saying. But Carradine is only 1 inch taller and 9 lbs more coming to out than Owa is now. To me, Owamagbe looks like he could still add weight and not lose much of his athleticism. I think that's where you and are finding differences. I just think he's better suited in the position he's played throughout college. If we kept him at the 5 technique it'd suit him better than at OLB. It's just my opinion.

Well, he DID play 5-tech at UCLA, so I can't say it's completely far fetched...

it's just to me, if I'm gonna go with a PROJECT type guy in the 1st, I want him to have the potential to be above and beyond the prototype at his position. The best 3-4 DE's in the NFL are very tall and long.

Carradine is about 2" taller and he looked slim carrying 270 lbs, where as Owa looks like any more muscle on his frame and he's gonna be slowed down.

I haven't seen him play in space or anything visual to prove he could do well playing in space, so I dunno if OLB would be good for him... I am just saying I think his potential at 5-tech is limited.

He'd probably make the most sense for us as a DE in our nickel packages and moving Aaron Lynch inside, I think he could have value there... but I'm not sure you do that with your 1st pick.

I do like your outside the box thinking and not just falling in line with what analysts that have no f'ing clue what Baalke or our FO thinks of players. I hate it when people say they don't like a pick solely on the principle that Mayock or one of his cronies didn't say that's where they would get drafted.

Same here. After rereading your reasoning I'm starting to come around.

I agree. And get what you're saying. I also agree with Lynch. He was nasty at ND on their DL and thought that's where we were going to put him. He's made a very nice transition to OLB for us though.

Thank you sir. There's a method to my madness lol.

Fair point. I think Smelter would have been a better suggestion. I just want a guy with dominant size strength, and athleticism in the red zone (at least Funchess has size, right?). Greenberry's bigger than the guys we have, but not by much. I still think he'd lose most jump balls against a guy like Sherman.
OO is at around 270 pounds (yeah, I know that Carradine brings just slightly more pounds to the table)...in order to be an efficient run-stuffing 5tech, he better should gain weight very fast.
If he isn't able to do this until the upcoming season, he won't play in the trenches much.

I'm fine with the pick but not with the scheduled position in our system. I even doubt that he can gain about 20-25 pounds of muscle.
