15) San Francisco (8-8) - DeVante Parker, WR, Louisville, Sr.
Michael Crabtree has already removed the 49ers from his Twitter bio, the modern-day harbinger of an eventual break-up. NFL.com credits Parker with only three drops since 2012, something that plagued the Niners last season. Top needs: CB, OG, WR

I'd love the Parker pick.

Me too. I'm hoping we come out of R1 with either a top WR, DL or OLB.

15: BRANDON SCHERFF, OG, IOWA: Out goes Mike Iupati, in comes Scherff.
if that happens...
No joke. It's like they forget how early we picked up MMartin and Thomas last year, or that Looney looked pretty good when Boone was out. Lazy reporting, IMO.
Agreed in a sense. There's enough existing young talent on the o-line to go in another direction in this year's first round. However, a guy like Scherff is almost a lock in terms of ability and could take over immediately for Iupati (with the ability to play OT in a pinch), providing even greater depth along the offensive front (and that's never a bad thing).
Staley - Scherff - MMartin - Boone - Davis
JMartin - Looney - Kilgore - Thomas
Would definitely prefer a playmaking WR or starting CB-type, but I also wouldn't be mad at that o-line depth at all.

I'm never against maintaining a strong OL, but I'm not sure if there is an OL in this draft that immediately upgrades our starting OL as a rookie. Not likely we keep 9 OL, so we're cutting one of them (Probably JMart). For those that aren't comfortable projecting Thomas as a starter at G, is he somehow more fit to play the swing tackle? I think a G who can play swing tackle can be a starting G (Boone, for reference). FWIW, I liked Thomas a whole lot last year before he got hurt, and I think it would be tough for any rookie in this class to beat him out for the LG spot, anyway.

Scherff is an absolute upgrade to fill that left OG role. I like Thomas, but he's not at the level of a Scherff in terms of overall talent/projection. Doesn't mean Thomas can't develop (I think he will and should be fine), but I don't know of too many who would see him as a better overall prospect than Scherff.
All that said, I'm not advocating we draft an OL early, I just wouldn't be upset if we did.

Seems likely that Scherff would a upgrade to the 2014 season that Iupati had....it sure seems like we are still gonna be a power run team first so 'heck yes upgrade the pulling LG spot by all means....

15. San Francisco 49ers -- Stanford OT Andrus Peat: The 49ers aren't likely to suddenly become more aggressive on offense with defensive-minded coach Jim Tomsula taking the reins. With Pro Bowl guard Mike Iupati set to hit free agency and Anthony Davis struggling because of injuries, the 49ers could once again re-invest along the offensive line, ignoring their needs for playmakers.

Except all indications are that we will be running a ZBS, instead of a power scheme next year.

I think draft hype blows guys up every year. Thomas has the feet, flexibility, strength, and physicality to be a stud in a ZBS, plus he's had a year in an NFL strength and conditioning program. I like his odds to start over any rookie.

Brandon Thomas Draft Profile: From NFL.com
STRENGTHS Good size with very long arms and big hands. Quick out of his stance. Knee bender with good balance and body control. Solid base. Places his hands inside and can pop and recoil. Strong-handed puncher with good grip strength once he latches on. Athletic, efficient mover. Light on his feet to step to the second level or pull. Can maneuver and throw his hips in the hole. Climbs to the second level. Three-year starter who played tackle (two-time first-team All-ACC at LT). Held his own against Jadeveon Clowney without help.
WEAKNESSES Power element missing. Limited hip snap -- not a road-grading mauler. Susceptible to bull rush when he sets tall. Could stand to improve lateral slide and inside punch to shut down strong inside moves. Inconsistent second-level sustain. Is better with simple assignments and effectiveness wanes in space. Can do a better job playing with his head on a swivel. Still learning what it means to prepare like a pro.
DRAFT PROJECTION Round 3
BOTTOM LINE Strong-bodied, dependable gap blocker who played left tackle in college but will likely slide inside in the pros. Showed improvement as a senior and has the potential to be a long-term fixture at left guard. Ability to play tackle in a pinch adds to value.

15. San Francisco 49ers: Dorial Green-Beckham, WR, Missouri. Character concerns continue to put Green-Beckham's draft status in question, but all it takes is one team to believe that he's past those issues and fall in love with his talent. A former blue-chip recruit, Green-Beckham showed flashes of big-time ability at Missouri before being dismissed and ending up at Oklahoma, where he turned pro after sitting out the 2014 season following his transfer. He's a huge target at 6-foot-5, 237 pounds, at a significant position of need with Michael Crabtree hitting free agency.

15. San Francisco 49ers - DL Arik Armstead, Oregon - Some might consider this a bit early for Armstead. An immediate or future replacement for Justin Smith is necessary. Armstead was off and on at times, but when he combined flashes, like in the College Football Playoff, the results speak for themselves.

I think that's a great scouting report for a starting guard in a zone blocking scheme
We don't need maulers
if that happens...
