Needless to say I'm disappointed with this pick. Generally speaking, I think Baalke does a solid job in the draft so I'm going to try to keep an open mind here. But man...a project defensive lineman at 17?

Baalke thinks he is so smart, the arrogant ass threw away a first round pick for (a)not a need position (B) way better talent on the board and in a position of need. Sitting there with his arms folded like he is genius and way smarter than 31 other GM"s and every talent evaluator out there. Only 2 evaluators of substance even had Armstead in a mock in the first round below #30

But the thread is about Armstead, he wasn't even the 2nd best DL in his own conference. Stanford's Henry Anderson was better. He not only has a higher motor, he was faster in the 40 at the combine, top performer 3 cone drill & 20 yard shuttle; a whole lot better college stats last season; and the icing on the cake is that Pro Football Focus has him leading all 3-4 defensive ends in terms of Pass Rushing Productivity and was second in Run Stop Percentage last year.

Yeah, no. I like Anderson as a prospect but there's a reason why Armstead was regularly seen as a 1st rounder and Anderson is seen as a 3rd rounder. Armstead has almost unlimited potential, he's a raw guy but with the proper coaching, he's simply got far better potential than Anderson.

Yeah - Jim Ward has been epic. Traded up for a meh safety in Reid. Passed on JJ Watt to draft a very talented guy who has missed almost two years for off field stuff. Borland is gone. Hopefully Tank the ACL will give us something in his third year. I would hardly call this an exemplary resume.

Reid is not a meh safety. Several teams passed on Watt and no one was really complaining about Alson as a consolation prize until Watt went all-world and Alson ran into legal issues. Borland retiring is not his fault, the fact that Borland was such a stud is actually a positive, isn't that obvious?

Trent has had a hand in our drafts since 2005, it is no fluke that we are one of top teams in regards to our roster composition and our own draft picks. That is taking into account the massive exodus this offseason (Crabtree, Culliver, Iupati, Borland, Willis....all drafted by us). We have had a stud D for several years now and Trent has had a large hand in that.

Right, DE is not a need, the 49ers still don't know if Justin Smith is coming back, Ray McDonald is gone, Darnell Dockett is 34 and coming off a torn ACL, Carradine is still raw and unproven, the logic is strong here. Anyone who wasn't expecting the 49ers to go DL early in the draft, was simply deluding themselves.


Espn had Armstead ranked as the #12th player in a draft, so to call him a reach or to say that there was better talent on the board is kind of ridiculous.

Agree, Armstead's upside much higher than Anderson's.

You think that Trent is making this pick due to some sort of perceived arrogance and basically to prove to everyone that he is the smartest guy in the room?! That's insane. The guy has his job on the line, he went all in when he got rid of JH. There is no way a GM sacrifices the good of the team and sabotages his own team and his job just so he can try and prove others wrong...

Tank and Arik have a ton of potential......................... which is the scariest word in the football language imo

Niners general manager Trent Baalke acknowledged he "coveted" Armstead at No. 15, so trading down to 17th overall and scooping up two more picks in the deal and still getting his man qualifies as a coup. At 6-foot-8, Armstead is the tallest defensive player taken in the first round since the common draft began. While he needs to get acquainted with the weight room and may not be an impact player immediately, his ceiling is just as high as he is tall. Thumbs up. -- Paul Gutierrez

They weren't kidding. Armstead is all projection after spending some of his college career tooling around with basketball, and then generating little in the way of quantifiable production on the football field. He's a mountainous 6-foot-7, 292 pounds, but underwhelmed at the Combine. Baalke will have to hope he's the smartest man in the room on this one.

I don't get it. 17th shouldn't be a project.

I was simply responding to the statement that Baalke has been great at picking D. Call it being unlucky with Borland. Call it unlucky with the Reid concussions (though let's be frank Antoine Bethea outplayed him last year). Call him unlucky that Aldon Smith has had legal issues. Or that Ward was overmatched in the slot before breaking his foot. Or that Culliver had legal issues and cost us the SB. That's a lot of bad luck.

Our D performing well had just as much if not more to do with our coaches' reclamation projects - Brooks, Rogers, Cox to name a few - or signing proven vets - J. Smith, Whitner, than it did our draft picks.

But we shall see. I'm pulling for this kid to develop into a freak. Just won't be surprised if he is literally out of the league in 3 years.

To be fair Tank had 11 sacks in 11 games before his injury in college. Kid had like 3 sacks in limited games and snaps last season. Arik had 4 sacks in 3 college seasons. Not exactly the same thing. Tank was a top 10-15 pick at the latest before his injury IMO.

Armstead is more in the Ray McDonald mold as a run stopping DE with Carradine definitely more of a pass rusher.
