Can someone please explain the 1st round hype around Arik Armstead?

He is really big and really athletic. Looked good in OSU game. Just scratching the surface.

But worth the 15th pick? I read that he struggles greatly with the run.

Devante Parker, Marcus Peters and Mario Edwards would suit me just fine as our first three picks.

Alternatively,

Trae Waynes, Devin Smith, and Mario Edwards (or maybe Henry Anderson) would be fine too. (Actually, I might even prefer this.)

Or

Arik Armstead, Marcus Peters and Agholor/Green could work as well. Though I'm not nearly as high on those WRs. But, I would be very happy with Armstead and Peters as the first two picks.

You believe Marcus Peters is going to be there for us in the second round? I'm not seeing that happening.

when all is said and done, i think Peters is a 1st rounder, and i think the niners should be the team that selects him

It appears Peters and UW have mended fences, and that will go a long way to help his draft stock.

For me, I see tremendous athleticism and great hands. At the same time, I don't see great consistency. Re-watching the UW-Hawaii game, he was flagged twice for pass interference, was sloppy in his footwork in much of the game, and let a very average receiver play him pretty much straight up. This game is simply one example. In other games, he fared better, in some, just as bad.

For me, I am looking for either consistency during the season, or signs that the corner has been turned at the Senior Bowl/off-season commitment to be excellent. Carl Davis is a guy who concerned me with his play in 2014, but was a dominant force at the Senior Bowl.

He is not going to be around in the mid-second round. Just too much talent.

Keep an eye on Kevin Johnson of Wake Forest. Kid looks like a really terrific player.

I think Armstead goes top 10. Big, fast athletic DL go quickly in the draft. He is going to blow up the combine at his size.

First, this is based specifically on MD's current projections in this thread. Peters is at 46, which puts him right around our 2nd pick. So, for this exercise, he is projected as a viable option in the mid 2nd round.

And in general, I will be shocked if players with any kind of off field issues don't fall during this draft. Minor issues, at least half a round to a round, more significant ones could be multiple rounds to undrafted unless they are absolutely elite talents. With all the chaos last year (Peterson, Rice, Mcdonald, Hardy, Gordon, Smith, etc..) and the NFL taking a hardline stance on personal conduct, I think this year in particular GMs are going to be very wary of anyone perceived as even the slightest bit of a headcase, troublemaker, drug user or other potential candidate for off-field issues.

It's no longer an issue of if you "trust" the guy, or think you can "reform" or "control" him. Even an accusation can mean they will miss the whole year. Plus get paid while doing so. And anyone found guilty will miss significant time. It's not just about clubhouse chemistry anymore or if they will produce. It has become like players with major injury concerns. There is a real question of it they will be available on Sundays if there is even a minor issue.

Moreover, after the beating the Ravens, Vikings, Browns, Niners and the NFL took for Rice, Peterson, Gordon and McDonald last year, I think there are very few GMs who want to put themselves on the hot seat for spending a high pick on a guy who could implode on them. Perhaps consistently good teams with picks late in rounds might take a bit of a flyer, or other teams as we get to day two and beyond, but I would be shocked to see many, and perhaps any, of these guys with first round talent, but off field concerns, go as high in the draft as some are projecting.

I expect GMs to be very cautious with those kinds of players this year.

I think you are right. But I'm hoping you are not. I would love for him to still be an option around our pick. If he is still there, along with one of the top 2 corners and one of the top 3 WRs, we should be in very good shape.

I'm confused. You say that this list is a "ballpark guess of the range I see the players falling." And you have Peters at 46. (Mid second round, exactly our pick as a matter of fact). But also say the above.

Have you changed your opinion since you made the list? Or am I missing something?

i see what you are saying with players with off the field issues, but Peters doesn't technically fall under that category. the issues he had were based on altercations with members of the coaching staff, an incident where the coaches, after his dismissal, said they'd blame it on his competitive nature. Washington coaches also mentioned that they would do their best in making sure NFL teams understand how truly talented Marcus Peters is. They even invited him back to the school's pro day. That's a lot to go on for a player with what I see as a minor flag.

Normally, I would agree. But I am guessing this year in particular even minor things may be enough to have players slip a bit. I would not be surprised at all if some teams have mandates from ownership to take any players with even the slightest hint of an issue of their board, or at least out of first (maybe even second) round consideration.

I like Peters a lot. And he may not last until our pick. All it takes is one team. But I'm not as high as some suggesting he would be worth our first round pick. He's a low first rounder/early to mid second rounder right now. It's possible a good combine/pro day and interviews will move him up. But, it wouldn't shock me at all to see him slide a half round or so, and see him go around pick 5-15 of the second round.

That said I wouldn't be shocked if someone grabbed in in the last third of the first round either, but I can certainly see it going the other way. This year in particular. It could be a rough year to have even the slightest perception of an issue with personality/off field stuff. Might cost a lot of good players some serious money.
