Waiting till the 7th round for a backup QB? That is a much bigger problem that needs to be solved earlier.
Like all your ideas in free agency and the first three rounds of the draft.
One last question.........what happens with Iupati?

Not a fan of all the choices especially HC but it is still a VERY real possibility.
Like VERY much Chudzinski BUT do you think he's accept the job or would he hold out for a HC position since they always come up?
I went through it 3x and couldn't find what you did w/Iupati. IMO, keep Boone since he can swing to either Tackle position and we have crap for Tackle back-up as it is. Let Iupati walk.
I'd also keep Vance since he's on a friendly rookie contract and see if a REAL coach can develop he and Kap together.
LOVE the first 3 draft picks!
Thanks for all the work.
He got fired after 1 year as a head coach. Regardless if it was his fault or not, it's still a mark on your overall body of work. Hue Jackson is a prime example. HC for 1 year, got fired, took an assistant job, and is now an OC for the Bengals.
Right now, Chud is an assistant on the Colts staff. No one will hire him for an NFL HC gig. But they will look at him as an OC, especially after his body of work with Cam Newton with the Panthers. He also coached Frank Gore at the U of Miami...random fact. He'd have complete autonomy of the offense. And if he's successful, he'd be a coaching candidate in 2-3 years.
Chud's best years as an OC came with the Panthers. Mobile QB with Newton, rushing attack with two RBs (Stewart, Williams), utilized TEs (Olsen, Shockey), and developed a passing attach with limited weapons at WR (Smith, LaFell). His offensive philosophy fits extremely well with the current talent of our roster.
We let Iupati walk strictly due to financial cap limitations. My bet is that we offer Iupati a contract that we deem fair value, but it's under what he'd actually receive on the open market. And that's why Baalke drafted B. Thomas last year. He's 2nd round talent that we grabbed in the mid-rounds due to injury.
Does Tomsula have any relationship with Chud?? I mean that's one of my huge issues with hiring Jim, is his lack of offensive experience and who he would bring in as OC....and as we saw in the past there will be a revolving door at OC with a defensive minded HC.

Does Tomsula have any relationship with Chud??
I doesnt look like they have crossed paths, but they are from same area of country, Chud from Ohio, and Tomsula, Eastern PA, (Fangio a PA guy too)

McDonald was a bad pick. Let's get something in return instead of nothing.
Exactly what is this being based off of? He's had like 5 passes thrown his way. I'd say that the jury is still out on him. Let's see how another staff can utilize him and feature him in the offense.
Its amazing how people want a guy to be an instant All Pro or he's otherwise deemed a bust. Bill Walsh was one of the biggest proponents of giving guys time to develop and adapt to the pro game. McDonald was a college slot receiver that the coaching staff basically turned into a full time blocker. Blocking wasn't his strength but he's become pretty good at it. I think more creative offensive minds could manage to integrate him into the passing offense as well. Even as just a blocker he's worth more than a 7th rounder, c'mon now.

With RayMac gone and Cowboy getting up there and question marks after that I think DL needs to be a priority much sooner than round 7. I think it's a top 4 need. I think Dial will be moved to play DT next season

You make a very valid and good point. It's much more likely that he ends up being our #2 or #3 TE instead of being traded for a late round draft pick. Based on Chud's experience coaching TEs, I think he could definitely find a way to utilize McDonald in the passing offense should he be our next OC.
He's just had some bad juju over the past 2 years, and I'm looking at it from more so a numbers game than anything else. But a lineup of David, McDonald, and Millard would make up a solid TE corps. Throw in Carrier in there, and it becomes dynamic.

I took the FA route in this mock by signing Jared Odrick. So then you'd have Smith, Odrick, Carradine, Dial, and Jerod-Eddie as the DEs across the DL. A nice balance of young and old.

I would hope Tomsula picks the best person for the job - regardless of previous ties. Remember...that's how we ended up with Greg Roman as our offensive coordinator.
But I'm sure the front office or other members of the coaching staff have connections to Chud. Plus, there's always Frank Gore who played under Chud at U of Miami.

I see that. I guess I'm just under the thinking that the FA isn't a guarantee. You have to hope the figures are right and the player wants to come here. In the draft they dont have a choice and I just see it as a higher priority than 7th round even if a FA is signed to hedge your bets

Not sure how you plan on the 49ers getting Chudzinski as I recall hearing that he had signed a 2 year contract with the Colts.
If his contract is in fact for two years then the only way the 49ers can get Chudzinski is if they hire him as a head coach, otherwise the Colts would have to give permission for him to become an OC. The NFL regards all assistant position moves as lateral moves. So if an RB coach from one team wants to become an OC for another, if his contract isn't up, his current team has to give permission to interview him. It's the reason why Donatell is the secondary coach for the 49ers and not the defensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

I'd love for us to give Rod Chudzinski and this would give him the most talent he's had since that 2001 University of Miami team, which was basically an NFL team anyway. But if what you said is correct, then Chud is now off of our radar.
The rumors are flying that Rex Ryan is set to be let go, so it's possible the entire staff is dismissed and that leaves Marty Morhinweg available (as an OC only).
