Draft a WR 6'3 and up with Speed

Remember, 5.53 is pretty fast, add on his long strides and wingspan that's a dangerous receiver

This of course is the truth. Look back at the past 5 or 6 drafts and see how many "big, tall and fast" receivers turned out to be absolute busts. They did well in college because they dominated with their athleticism primarily and never developed the necessary skills as receivers to be quality NFL receivers.


I think the biggest factors that should be looked at are a guys hands and his route running ability. If a guy has great hands in college, he'll probably have pretty good hands in the NFL, if a guy has lousy or questionable hands in college, he'll probably continue to have iffy hands in the NFL. If a guy is a flat out terrible or lazy route runner in college, he probably won't be a great route runner in the NFL. Don't get fooled by the measurables.


I do think that the 49ers need some additional speed and explosiveness but going along with that, you want a guy with reliable hands, who runs routes at least decently, someone you can depend on.

I couldn't agree more. However Baalke decides and whoever he decides to select, he needs to hit on a #1 WR. Yep, speed, hands, routes, discipline. All of it. Trade, steal, beg.

We need guys who are reliable catchers in the first, second and third place. We need guys who can create separation/run routes, who can block and who fight for the ball if Kap makes a bad throw.
Size and/or speed is a luxury and nice to have. I'd rather go for speed than for size because we simply need to have some WRs whose speed is respected in ordert to stretch the field.

But, please don't forget that we still have Ellington and Patton, who should be contributors for #2-#3 WR next year, imho. Another WR, perhaps even a true #1 could be picked in the first or second round but it should be enough until day 3.
I think that we can play with Boldin, Patton, Ellington and SJ and an additional WR plus some FA or an undrafted guy next season.

Like Phoenix indicated, the quality of the NFL CBs based on athleticism is on a very high level so that some kind of good athleticism is more a necessity than a property which will decide a duel over and over again.

Sorry, that should not be a personal attack trough a sarcasmic sentence. Washington, right now, seems to be an almost perfect example of being big AND fast WR who doesn't provide any other quality at all.
I mean, let's exaggerate a little bit: would you pick Usain Bolt, right now as a track star, because he is tall (1.95m) and fast though he is neither a polished route-runner nor a good catcher?
I wouldn't and that is valid for football guys who seem to be rather athletes than football players. Unless you plan to bench and teach him for 2-3 years.

Some guys would come up with Megatron or AJ Green because both of them are big and fast. But there surely were not drafted that high because of these two attributes.

He runs a 5.53?? ...if that's the case along with all his off-field issues he won't even get drafted!

No way he is that slow! He was clocked at 4.37 and I would love to take this head case late in the draft lol....kid can ball, just get him a babysitter like Jones did for Dez until he grows up lol.

Well I think everyone wants someone with size and some speed not the "same" 6'0 200 lb players that don't have speed. We have a ton of this right now.

I was really high on OBJ and had us moving up for him in my mock, he has speed, great hands, and run's amazing routes. He just knows how to get open. I wish we would have moved up for him, he is a future star!

There are a ton of " L'Damian Washingtons" in the draft every year. Tall fast, but can't catch or run a route. I don't think that is the player people had in mind lol.

I would love to take a chance on Green-Beckham if he goes in the draft. On the field he is what we are looking for and hopefully he can work on all the off the field stuff. (We were looking at trading for Gordon so the front office was interested in a player with skill but has issues).

My picks:

Phillip Dorsett Miami 5'10" 200 pounds

Tony Jones Northwestern 6'0" 190 pounds

(Not in the 1st round)

9ers have two big body receivers in Stevie Johnson and Anquan Boldin, time for some speed. Only two big boy receivers out there I'd draft in rounds 1 or 2 is Jalen Strong (depends on if he declares) and Ty Montgomery.

Perhaps he has yet to draft one because there have been higher rated players taken,or better values on the board when a pick came up...there is also the possibility that we were not able to move up to grab someone we liked. You cannot look at a teams draft history and automatically conclude what a teams mantra is with what types of players they will or will not draft, there is more to it than that.

We tried it with AJ Jenkins in the first round who is fast. We tried it with Baldwin who is tall and fast. Stop this "Baalke does not want this WR-type at all".

There it is. Great hands, amazing routes. Speed is the top of the cream.

We dont need a #1 guy that needs to be drafted in the first round. If there was a guy I dont believe we would be a bad enough team to get a guy as such anyways. I want the team to target a guy like this in the mid round 3rd-5th.. find a guy like Martavious Bryant. He gets his success from Antonio Bryant . so it leaves him 1 on 1 with shorter Dbs and the fact he is just ideal for a redzone jumpball fade pass in the endzone. If Kap can ever learn Touch passing and how to drop a pass over the top. We can have a guy that can benefit in the same way from Boldin, Johnson,& Patton all good route runners with nice hands.

Height is irrelevant.


We just need a guy that can fly and get open in the mold of antonio brown, ty hilton, john brown, emmanuel sanders, etc.
