2015 49ers Draft Needs

Agreed with your other assumptions. I think Lattimorre can take over 3rd back duties if he plays in 2014.
Sorry for the bad expression here:
I assume that Bethea won't be here very long. Iirc your statement about his contract, we can cut him after 2015 at a very low price. Assuming that we indeed will cut him then, we need a reliable replacement (which could/should be Ward) or at least a backup by 2016 --->picking a guy in draft 2015 and build him up until 2016 is the underlying idea here.

Now, you brought up Dahl, thus a safety-backup is an even more pressing need.

You think that Lattimore could be a Sproles-type RB here?

No worries bud. I felt in offseason Bethea was a 2yr deal guy, but right now I can see him lasting here for a few more years. But I agree we need to draft a Safety to groom if Ward sticks to CB, which I wouldn't mind, if he improves more and more.

I like Lattimore, but idk if he is a Sproles type back, so we could use a speedy guy. I want to see how well Ellington does for us as a scat back/3rd Back/Sweeps/Etc..
Only time will tell

But until then:
any sproley-RBs out there who are reliable in the passing game?
And what about 5-technique-DE, say in rounds 2-3?

I don´t like to compare players but if you´re looking for a speed back who can catch and also plays physical, Ameer Abdullah is your prospect. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3AfDTJXgoRw

Thx

as for 5-tech-DE:
what about 1)Mario Edwards Jr. from FSU, 2)Ray Drew, Georgia or 3)Shawn Oakman, Baylor?

I like Abdullah a lot also. I'm just getting back into college football. Need to do some scouting reports for pigskinprospects.com.

I like Edwards and I also like Leonard Williams as a 3-4 end.

Can't have too many pass rushers. Smith has his peaks and valleys. Brooks is getting older. I say draft another 3-4 OLB.

Do you mean Aldon Smith or Justin Smith from the DE position? Because Aldon Smith is pretty consistent. He has some pretty dominant 4 to 5 sack performances, but I think he gets to the QB is the majority of the games he plays. It's not a Michael Sam type of situation where all of the sacks come in like 3 games.

I would like to see us invest in another 5 technique DE prospect. I don't know how long Ray is going to be with us and I'd like to say goodbye to Dobbs
1. Defensive line - one DE to potentially replace J. Smith and Ray Macdonald.

2. WR - especially if Crabtree signs elsewhere or Boldin retires

3. QB - Both Gabbert and Johnson should be gone. Likely one vet free agent signed. too,

4. S - Craig Dahl will be the next Vet to be replaced by a younger and cheaper option. Bethea will be here at least one more year.

5. ILB - Willis will be going into his 9th year and the Niners can improve on Moody and Wilhoite as their primary backups.

6. RB - They usually draft one, depends on how Kendall Hunter recovers over the offseason.

7. K - Dawson is not starting this year off so well.

CB, TE/FB, OLB, Offensive line all seem set to me.

1. All on board here. We need help against the pass (basing this judgment off of how we've looked the last couple of seasons and not just one game). Jim Tomsula is a miracle worker as D-line coach. We typically give him guys who didn't make it on other teams, or late round picks/UDFAs. I'd like to give Tomsula another player with first round talent like Tank Carradine to work with.

2. I still think its more likely that Crabtree stays rather than goes. But we do need a receiver. Just a guy who can flat out fly down the field with the type of speed that defenses will fear.

3. I understand why the 49ers got Blaine Gabbert and I honestly hope it works out, if for nothing else that we don't waste a draft pick on him and his two million dollar salary. Looking at the Jaguars, you almost wish we got Chad Henne instead. He seems like the ideal longterm backup. Oh well. Lesson learned and perhaps we will spend a 3rd round to 5th round pick on a guy to develop.

4. Yes, yes, yes. Dahl has to go. Getting a rookie safety to replace him will be good on so many levels. We'd have better talent, a potential core special teamer, and a cheap salary. Might not be a bad idea to go as high as the second round.

5. I actually think we are ok. We have Shane Skov on the practice squad and Borland coming up. No issue if we invest a late pick or land another UDFA, but I wouldn't consider ILB a high priority until we see how close to form NaVorro Bowman is.

6. Let's keep it going. Get a speed back that will shut their mouths and make the best of the few opportunities they will receive.

7. It was only one kick. We'll see how he looks the rest of the season. I'm in favor of replacing him only because of salary. The only thing is, there are no sure things with kickers. Didn't the last two (Caleb Sturgis and I can't remember the name of the other guy), not look so hot? I also think we are too dependent upon our kickers because they are so automatic. Perhaps we'll be more determined to put up 6 instead of going for 3 when we get to the redzone if we had a rookie kicker.

Oh my god don't say that. I hope he plays at least 16 seasons all with us.
The top need might just be CB ... Culliver, Cox, and Cook are at the end of their contracts and we have no idea what we have in Acker and Reaser.

DE is everybody forgetting Dial? They are also still trying to develop Okoye. Ramsey is on IR but has potential. TJE looked a lot better last year than in week 1. It would be nice to get a stud DE, but it's not the top need, and there are not many star 3-4 DEs.

WR makes sense.

QB absolutely, every year if there is someone late they like ... some athletically gifted QB who needs some development in a mid round

S please yes ... bigger than Ward with ST experience

RB should be picked up every year, this year we got Hyde and Millard. Someone who needs development with a history of having good hands and vision.

K seems to be easy to fill with free agents.

TE is coming due soon.

WR, who knows whats going to happen with Crabtree, plus he is always injured and Boldin is going to be 34 next year

Tuitt would have been a nice pick in round 2, imho.

Lesson learned and perhaps we will spend a 3rd round to 5th round pick on a guy to develop. I would even go for a QB in round 2, if needed. Investing a day 2 pick once every 4 years in order to get a cheap backup-QB should be an alternative for us...or a potential starter (Kap will turn 27 in November).

I mean you cannot simply replace an all-pro like Bowman but we simply don't have anyone who comes even CLOSE to him. Borland is the only candidate, imho. Wilhoite is too slow, Moody seems to be a ST-player only, Skov is too slow. Willis and Bowman are paid very good. Imho, there are several reasons to go for another ILB unless Borland, Wilhoite or Borland shows us some special value.

6. Let's keep it going. Get a speed back that will shut their mouths and make the best of the few opportunities they will receive. Yep

7. It was only one kick. We'll see how he looks the rest of the season. I'm in favor of replacing him only because of salary. The only thing is, there are no sure things with kickers. Ad 5) again:
I told another story during the mock draft "process" but now I think I was dead wrong on this issue. Though, our FO is far more intelligent than me and recognized this issue--->Borland-pick.
Kendricks, ILB from UCLA, perhaps?
DE - Justin doesn't have that much left in the tank and I think we could be moving on from Ray Mac sooner rather than later (regardless of how his case plays out. Age, injuries factor). I also think Dobbs and maybe TJE could be on their way out. If the draft was tomorrow and there's an excellent DE prospect with nice upside, that'd be my pick.

Back up QB - Seriously, enough digging in the trash bin for reclamation projects. Let's get a kid in the mid rounds that can play and we can develop behind Kap. Doesn't have to be a high upside guy but someone who can move the chains, manage an offense, and help the team win...something McCoy and Gabbert couldn't/can't do.

CB/WR - Going to depend on FA losses and re-signings. CB FAs after this year: Culliver, Cox, Cook. WR: Crabtree
