I like this idea as well. I'd keep the first round pick however and see how it plays out and who falls. If the major players (Verrett, Beckham, Tuitt, Hagman, Cooks, etc) are gone, then trade back and pick up the extra second and third. We could conceivably come out away with Moncrief, Joyner, Buchanon, Herron or Ellington, Barrow, Archer, and get some future 2015 picks. If we do indeed move James, then we can either package him with a lower pick to move into the third (maybe James + our 4th + one of the sevenths) or trade him straight up for a 2015 pick.

Anything is possible. That is what training camp is for, you are supposed to compete for your job. Just because you were on the roster last season that doesn't mean you will be again this year. There is no complacency in pro football unlike the NBA when you are secured by your contract.

I love the idea. With 8 picks in the 2nd, we can clean up !! Just too many great players to be had in the 2nd, plus it will allow us a slightly larger margin of error.

Good job none of the other teams know this.

Well the bottom 8 teams shouldnt! They are the bottom 8 for a reason. That's 8 teams and 8 opportunities for Baalke to do his GM abuse and plunder thing.

People keep saying things like this. The reality is that 8 roster spots very much could be available. We can stand to upgrade or add at the following positions QB, WR, OL, DL, OLB, ILB, CB, S. That right there is 8 spots in itself. Not to mention that we very well could draft two wide receivers. And we could draft a couple offensive and defensive linemen. Competition is key and what Harbaalke value!
You're suggesting, for the most part, to replace skilled players with other skilled players. IMO, this doesn't make best use of the team's selections.

Not necessarily. Dial & Jerod-Eddie are not locks to make the team. Nor is Jon Baldwin, Jonathan Martin, Chris Cook. And I'm pretty sure Dobbs is as good as gone. So 8 roster spots being up for grabs is not unrealistic at all.

Keep in mind that Baldwin, Martin and Cook were all recent first and second rounders. It's a little foolish to assume that second and third rounders will easily replace them.

Also, Dobbs and JerodEddie are very solid. I doubt a mid round pick will easily replace them.
I agree Wisconsin. Some posters seem to believe that any new draftee will have to be an improvement. This is particularly the imagination of rose-tinted glasses on a good and deep roster like the current Niners.
If 13 rookies come in and are better than 13 people on the roster, 13 roster spots are available. While that is unlikely, there is no such thing as "This many roster spots available."

Iron sharpens iron the more competition the better. If we draft a ILB and he is better than PWillis then we have a new starter and the team is better for it. We might not need all 11 picks but it is very possible that we use them all. 8 players in rounds 2 and 3, that will put everyone on the current roster on notice that your spot is not secure. Quality competition makes our team better whether they make the team or not.
I like the idea of moving back into next year. If we keep trading back year after year , we will continue to be able to draft young players to replace those current players that leave via free agency when their contracts come up for renewal. We can't keep everybody and we can't blame players that have the opportunity to cash in by moving to another team. So continually having 8-10 draft picks year after year allows the team to replenish the roster and keep the quality of play at the highest level without busting the salary cap.

1) I am betting we don't draft a player better than Willis.

2) next year we are going to need players as well, either through injury, FA or busted choices. So let's not use it all up this year. Pass a little onwards.

A good and deep roster with an abundance of picks in the first three rounds w/ relatively few needs outside WR and CB. I think it's wishful thinking (as well as unrealistic) to expect a ton of spots to magically open up and a bunch of mid round rookies to easily supplant the deep depth that will be in front of them.

I see the logic behind it, but ultimately, if the Niners have their guy circled in, and they're willing to trade up for him, it is what it is and I'd support it.

Quality >>> Quantity

Yup, as long as they get "their" guy... Hopefully Harbs and Baalke are together in who they are targeting,

You know Harbaalke are all about competition right? You really think the team is content with Craig Dahl as the backup safety? Or they're not thinking about Bethea's future replacement? Or aren't thinking about competition at quarterback? Harbaugh has already talked about David Fales being a top 5 QB. You think we're good with Jerod Eddie and Dobbs as depth at dline? Or we're fine at OLB depth? We ranked in the middle of the packs for sacks last year. We're not content with that. Harbaugh is always about improving the team, constantly figuring out how we can get better.

2nd-4th round picks in this draft are likely to be upgrades over S Dahl, CB Cook, DE Dobbs, DE Jerod Eddie, OL Snyder, TE Celek, WR Baldwin, QB Bethel Thompson. We can and should definitely try to improve at those positions. Add to that probable selections of ILB and OLB for depth.

lol Dobbs and Jerod Eddie are serviceable at best. Both were undrafted free agents for a reason. 2nd-4th round selections can very likely replace them and improve this team. Trade up in the second round and select Tuitt. Or go nab Dominique Easley. Both are easily major upgrades over Dobbs and Eddie and both have pro bowl type potential.

Trading picks for next years draft does not bother me. I definitely don't mind the idea of just staying put and getting the players that come to us in the 1st 3 rounds and then trade our 4th,5th,and 7th round picks for next years draft. I just want to explore all the possiblities and 8 picks in rounds 2 and 3 sounds intriguing in this draft with all the good players that will be available.

I don't really think we will get a player better than Willis either I was just being extreme to make a point
