Will we ever see it ever again in the history of the NFL Draft?
On a serious note, does anyone know how good Dustin Hopkins from FSU is as compared to kickers the last few years?

I predict that a kicker or punter will be taken in rounds 1-2 at some point in the next 10 years. Every 15-20 years one comes along who is good enough to garner a high pick. It's happened before, it will happen again. IIRC Hopkins isn't clear cut as the best kicker in THIS draft. Dunno about the past few years.

I know this is kind of a joke but in seriousness it wouldn't blow my mind if we used a third rounder on a kicker, If we used our late second then I would think that this is some awesome kicker we're gettin. You can win or lose a lot of games by a kick in the final seconds

Legacy of Al Davis in 2013. 11 of his last 12 first round picks are NO longer with the team. If McClain gets cut which seems inevitable, it will be 12 for 12. Crazy!

Yes, no matter how good they are no normal team will select one that early again. Unless they can convert field goals from their own 15.

No kicker is worth anything higher than a 4th round pick IMO. It's a very hard position to evaluate. Given that college kickers get very little big-game experience and the fact that they don't have to worry about elite athletes trying to block their kicks there would be a very high bust potential if kickers were picked that early.
Of course, good kickers are very valuable. But their value isn't proven until they have kicked in the NFL for at least a year or two. So never draft them early.

It is also a supply and demand thing... there are a lot of good college kickers that never even get the chance to try out for an NFL team. And the difference in ability between them and guys that do is very small (if any). So why spend a high draft pick on a guy that probably isn't much better than the bunch of guys that went undrafted.

I think you can see a kicker in the 3rd or 4th round if they are good enough. I don't think Hopkins is rediculous in the 4th round as somebody will almost surely take him in the 5th. So you would want to get out in front of that a bit. He can hit pretty consistently from 55+.

Janikowski worked out great, doubt there'll be a kicker like that in this draft. So, no...use one of our two 2nd rd picks on a kicker instead.

Hopkins and the kid from Fla (Sturgis) are arguably the two best K in this draft...in Walter's Football draft rankings, he lists Sturgis as going in the 4th to 6th rds, Hopkins 5th to 7th rds. That said, there are always a few teams that'll take top K's earlier...to try and get a jump. Anything earlier than 4th rd would be very unusual, though.
