What greater need? You take a WR, he's probably not cracking the Top 3 next year, and Ginn is the #4 WR, so guess what, his ass is on the bench. Guards can be found throughout the draft and the 49ers might simply be willing to go with who is on the roster right now.

The 49ers biggest needs are scoring in the red-zone instead of kicking field goals and converting on 3rd down. When it comes to that, there is NOBODY they can choose that will allow them to create as big of a mismatch out on the field in those situations as Fleener would and nobody that would make as big of a difference in keeping potential touchdowns from turning into field goals.

And the coached up theory sounds great...if it was a fact every player in the NFL would be coached up to do everything perfectly.

No, it came from the same source, the same quotes have been reprinted on NFL.com and a variety of other sites, and just coincidentally right before the draft, also there's stuff coming out about Kalil and Claiborne as well......this happens every single year and people are still gullible enough to fall for it.

Don't listen Nick. This board has made him better than VD already when he is clearly a slightly better than average Greg Olsen.

Greg Olsen was supposed to be solid. I mean, he's OK, but he's not great. He has flashes, but he's not top-10 at his position.

I think that's what Fleener is gonna end up being. I think we can do better in round 1 than grabbing a Greg Olsen clone. Fleener is more Greg Olsen than GRONK.

In all honesty, he's only getting SUPER hyped because he's a local star. Don't get me wrong. I think he can play is a good player but not nearly as good as everyone on this board is making him out to be. I agree we need more offensive playmakers but at WR and RB.

I guarantee if he and VD came out at the same time, people on this board would rather have Fleener over VD. The Local hero is always the greatest player at his position.

Yes the local Bay Area players always get overhyped on the WZ. Everybody wants to pick all Stanford, Cal, and San Jose St. players every year. Those aren't the only guys.

But Fleener can help us. He's tall, with tremendous hands, runs good routes, and has very good speed. Also no small thing he knows the Harbaugh system inside and out. So no doubt he could be of use to this team.

I agree SD in that Fleener is good but I disagree with most on how good he really is. Either way, our needs at WR/CB/G/RB are much greater than that of TE.
I'd love to see Fleener wearing Red and Gold but I'd be very surprised if he makes it past Denver. So it's gonna cost players to go up and get him. Worth it? Hmmmmm, I'm not so sure because losing a 3rd would hurt especially with all the quality WRs that are lumped together in the talent department with 3rd round grades attached. Decisions decisions....

I agree with that statement, as redzone fieldgoals were the number one cause of "wife leaves living room to avoid explosive outburst of profane, creative, and anotomically impossible suggestions directed towards television" on Sundays. I see Fleener as the best fix to those problems as well. I can't imagine that HarBaalke don't see the same issue. It is totally possible that they see another way to fix it, though. I want TDs, and I don't care how we get them, as lond as we get them in bunches. I would like to get Fleener, but if they solve the problem with a WR, RB, or different TE, I'm still good.

Mayock and Cosell disagree on Fleener, and they are the two draftnicks I respect the most.

Awesome. Let them take him!

Really, I wouldn't be butt hurt if we took Fleener, but I just don't think he is worth the pick. I think we can help the team in other places.

Give me a G, CB, WR...

I can't wait til we pass on him at #30.

This place will explode and it won't by my people this time.

Mayock simply states that Fleener will need to develop more as a blocker and should be a 2nd rounder, not that big of a divide. Nobody questions that the guy runs great routes, has good hands, can stretch a defense and is great with making catches over his head, all things that this team badly needs.

That's all Alex needs.

He wont be a pass catcher only.....he still has to block which he does poorly.

1 dimensional kid.....pass!!

He's Greg Olsen, but everyone around here thinks he's GRONK.
Even if you don't want the Niners to draft this guy, can't you at least agree that on 3rd and 3, or in the redzone, he would be a great option to have out on the field. Even if we went into a pass happy mode because we were down some scores or a hurry up in a 2 minute drill or just going into the spread, he would always be on the field.

He might be the most overrated guy in the draft. He's awful as a blocker.

He could use more power and bulk to be an effective blocker in the NFL. If he can't add weight, power running teams may not view him as a three-down player, and think of him only as a receiving tight end.

Willing to lower his shoulder and fight for additional yardage, but isn't going to strike fear into the hearts of defenders with his physicality.
Blocking: Far from an intimidator.

Cons:

Willing blocker, but could defiantly improve in this area
Wont out run anyone after the catch
How much of his success was because of Andrew Luck?
Needs to add more to his frame
Durability concerns

SI's Peter King "doesn't see" the Giants selecting Stanford TE Coby Fleener with the 32nd overall pick.
"Not with Mike Pope on that staff," King wrote on Twitter. New York is a popular mock-draft landing spot for Fleener, but Pope -- widely considered one of the NFL's best position coaches -- wants his tight ends to be able to block. Blocking is Fleener's weakness. We still like Fleener's chances of going in the first round, but the Giants may not consider him a schematic fit.

NFL Network's Mike Mayock expects Stanford TE Coby Fleener to be drafted between picks No. 28 and 40.
"Ability wise, he's a second-rounder," says Mayock, who expects Fleener to be an impact NFL pass catcher. It's in other areas that Fleener struggles, however. "This kid is not a trained killer," said Mayock. "He's not a great blocker." We do expect Fleener to be a late first-round pick because so many teams are looking for Jimmy Graham and Aaron Hernandez types at tight end.

NFL Films guru Greg Cosell believes Stanford TE Coby Fleener has the ability to "attack vertical seams," and likens him to Owen Daniels.
Cosell also calls Fleener a "fluid route runner" who is efficient off the line of scrimmage. Although still somewhat raw as a blocker, Fleener's athleticism and monster receiving potential have him locked in as a first-round pick.

Stanford TE Coby Fleener timed in the 4.45 range during the school's Thursday Pro Day. The time is unofficial and every team will go by their own stopwatches, but for a 6'6/247 pound tight end that is outstanding. Fleener is still recovering from a high-ankle sprain suffered in Stanford's Fiesta Bowl but posted a 37" vertical jump. With the tight end position generating plenty of mismatches in the NFL, Fleener is locked in as a first-round selection. He is an excellent receiver but will need to work on his blocking inline.
I think with the 2 TE in, they need 1 off those 2 to stay in as an additional blocker in the running or pass protection. This goes to Delanie. Because of that VD doesn't have to stay in as much like in past years. If it's Fleener and VD, 1 of these 2 has to take the Walker role. So who do you pick to do that? Tough choice because they are both good as a pass catcher. I think they can teach Fleener to block. Delanie can catch the ball that's not a problem, despite what some are saying.

You will be sacrificing Fleener's ability for some of the grunt work. Unless you put VD into the Delanie roll to put Fleener out to catch the ball. VD may not be with that.
