Why doesnt anyone want to take a QB at #7?

Would rather trade up into the late 1st or early 2nd for a guy like Ponder or Dalton.

In fact, that's what I seeing Harbaugh/Baalke doing.

Too many top defensive prospects at #7 to take a guy like Gabbert who isn't that much better (or better at all) than a guy you can get in the 30's and 40's.

I want Mallett more than any other player in this draft at #7.

A lot depends on where Gabbert is selected. If he is available and Peterson, Miller, and Dareus are off the board...

1) we'd entertain offers
2) look at Quinn
3) look at Amukamara
4) look at Gabbert

I can see the reasoning by going and getting Gabbert to eliminate ourselves from the "trading frenzy" of the latter 1st round. Then we can sit back and wait for potential 1st round graded players to fall at #45, or even use our multiple picks to target specific players after word.

Getting a QB early on in the draft gives the Niners more flexibility throughout the remainder of the draft. If we were to select Quinn/Amukamara, then we are basically required to go after Ponder/Locker/Kaepernick/Dalton/Stanzi and potentially trade away our 2nd (and 3rd) or next years number 1st. It seems like more value to go with Gabbert who arguably has more upside and could be a better franchise QB in the long term.

And Harbaugh has said that spread QBs are not at a disadvantage. And with Baalke letting slip "throwing talent", it wouldn't surprise me at all, and if it did happen, I would be 100% behind Gabbert as the new face of our franchise.

So it's draft day and Harbaugh and Baalke are in the war room. Harbaugh says he loves __________ QB and could really envision him running his offense. He likes his skills and intangibles, and he has outstanding potential to be a great NFL Qb. We draft that QB because this is what we hired Harbaugh for. New regimes = New QB.

This is a QB driven league. CBs and OLBs dont have the impact of a QB. I agree that there will be some really talented defensive players on the board at 7. But it would certainly be worth it to draft a QB that Harbaugh wants to run his offense.

But what QB do you think Harbaugh would say that about in the draft ??

Andy Dalton was a total winner in college, is extremely intelligent, and ran a complicated offense that lit up people. While his arm strength downfield isnt superior, his decision making and ability/willingness to pull the trigger in tight spots makes me think he could be a QB that Harbaugh would covet for his WCO.

You would draft Dalton at 7?

I would take the QB that Harbaugh wants to run his WCO. I would trust his judgement and evaluation. But yes, if Dalton is the guy Harbaugh wants then I would draft him at 7.

True, but the NFL felt the same way about Aaron Rodgers which is why he slipped so far down. Point being, the obvious franchise QBs sometimes aren't quite so obvious at first.

Don't get me wrong, the Aaron Rodgers' of the world aren't easy to spot, but I think if you have the right infrastructure in place, you can take a talented-but-not-exactly-franchise-type of QB and turn him into a winner if you're patient enough and you surround him with enough coaching/talent.

IMO, where teams really miss is how they handle their young QBs (expecting them all to come in right away and light it up).

Yah thought would be terrible drafting to take him at 7. If you really want him that bad trade back into the late first round and get him there. You dont reach for a second round QB in the top ten and give up a premier defensive starter.
