Ryan Mallett, he is the most talented QB in this draft. I followed him from when Michigan recruited him. The biggest knock on him is his off field issues and he made a couple bad decisions in big spots, these things can be corrected with a good coach/teacher/supporting cast, which I believe we have. From raw passing talent alone, he is head and shoulders ( pun intended ) about the other QB's. A huge man with a ROCKET arm. I love when prospects fall like this due to off field issues, all that means is he can be had at a good value. I watched a bunch of his starts the past 2 years, he can make ANY throw on the field, he is the ONLY QB's from this class that can make the claim. Let him sit for a year or two, bring in a guy like McNabb to mentor him and I feel like he will be a great QB for a long time.

He is head and shoulders above all these guys from a pure passing standpoint. They even said so during the combine when he destroyed the competition. I love the media, they latch onto something and never let it go. He had a bad interview, real bad, and most likely smoked pot and got drunk when he was in college..WOW...big shocker! CBS has an entire article about Ponder, and Dalton and Stanzi and the rest of these jokers, this is all they said about Mallett =
"Mallett, who is from the University of Arkansas, has the biggest arm of all, and one general manager said he's the most NFL-ready of the group. But there are questions about his character. "
Thats it? Character? Last season, wide receiver Mike Williams and running back LeGarrette Blount slipped into later rounds or weren't drafted due to character issues. They became steals for their respective teams.
Now Nick Farley and Clayborn are dropping because of Character issues?? Come on, these are kids, they all have character issues.
Everyone loves Cam Netwon, but if you want character issues..how about..
1. Transferred out of Florida after facing felony charges on burglary, larceny and obstruction of justice.
2. The pay-for-play controversy with his father
3. The most recent comments of wanting to be an icon and entertainer
But nobody says anything about that and agree he should be #1 overall.
The media kills me..forget interviews and the combine, WATCH THE TAPE OF THEM PLAYING FOOTBALL! When its all said and done, 5 years from now, Mallett with be the next Big Ben ( maybe in more ways than one ) and the best QB from this draft.
Word.

As far as the "experts" saying #7 is too early to take Mallett? They said the same thing when we drafted Patrick Willis.
Peterson and Miller are getting too much attention from the media to fall down to 7. Those two along with media man crushes Cam and Blaine will also be gone. If all 4 are off the board, how do we not go with the most important piece on the field. I think Mallett is better than both those QB's. My only fear is those 4 go before Arizona picks and they pick Mallett. I know that seems VERY far fetched to the Mock Drafters of the world, but when have they ever gotten it right? Zona needs a good QB just like we do. What if the 1st 6 picks go...Newton, Miller, Gabbert, Dareus, Peterson, Jones...how do we not go with Mallett?
The only other guy I could see there is Prince, but to me, Ryan is the best player in our MOST needed position for long term health of this franchise. Shut down CB's are more available than Franchise QB's..hell we could pick up Nnamdi Asomugha. Id rather have Asomugha and Mallett ( I know, this is my own best case scenario ) than to have say Peterson and Stanzi/Ponder/Dalton.
I have faith though that Jim and the gang will know what Ryan Mallett is and will make the right call.

Ryan Mallett will win a superbowl, NFL MVP awards, and will go to many pro bowls. He will be the pffensive rookie of the year. Don't pass up Ryan Mallett.

It's nowhere close to being compared to the year we drafted Patrick Willis.
Willis was the best linebacker coming out in the 2007 NFL draft. Jon Beason was a close second, but he didn't have the versatility that Willis had, IMO. If I remember correctly, all the draft articles and draft shows had the Niners choosing between Willis and Carricker. Nowhere did it have Willis' draft stock all around the 1st and the 2nd like Mallett.
I'm with you that Mallett is an intriguing talent. Played in a pro style offense in a very difficult conference and playing pretty well. My issue is his athleticism. When I watch him play, his feet are slow and once he's under pressure, that's it, he won't be able to elude them. I can see him being successful with a great o-line.

Someone like cam newton or KP would be better behind the oline we have being groomed hopefully soon!

A better example is Tampa and Josh Freeman. Most people had him as a 2nd round quarterback prospect. When it comes to quarterbacks f*ck what everyone else thinks. That's not a position where you say oh well if this guy gets picked we can take the next best prospect.
Just understand you take someone in the 1st round and that coach is betting his career on him.

I agree with the bolded, especially if you believe you have the right coaching in place to help that QB become successful. Though I think it's a little funny that you mention Freeman, since Mel Kiper was one of the few experts who actually had him ticketed to the Bucs at #19 in his early 2009 mocks (they eventually moved up 2 spots to get him at #17 overall).
Josh Freeman wasn't an easy choice
The larger point holds, though. If you want a QB and the coaching staff/management believe in him, you do whatever it takes to get him and let the chips fall where they may.

Raheem Morris was on Freeman's coaching staff at Kansas State. Alot of experts put 2 and 2 together.
I'm pretty sure most people had him graded as a 2nd round prospect. I could be wrong about that, I just remember Freeman having very little love here on the Zone. In that article you posted it states that some people had him as a 3rd to 4th round prospect so you can see what I was trying to get at.

There is no doubt that Mallett is physically gifted. But so much more goes into whether a QB can produce like Montana or Rodgers in high pressure games.
I just watched John Gruden interview Mallett on an ESPN video, and Mallett just doesn't strike me as real sharp. Without pressure, he may do great. But how will he function when the opponent starts messing with his mind?

Watch the one with Locker, Mallett could pass for an offensive coordinator compared to that guy.

I was actually agreeing with you, just mentioning that there was 1 expert who pegged him perfectly, but he was one of the few and most thought he was nuts for thinking that.
