Mel Kiper's Mock Draft 2.0

I think that most people in here want Spiller in round 1. I would consider him there as well but NOT if Haden is available thats for sure. Spiller does give the Niners something they really do need. SPEED! I think Mccluster is also someone that can be that speed back and we can quite possibly get him in rd 2.

spiller is more than just a rb, and if you think gore has plenty of yrs left at the age of 27 your kidding yourself. do you really want to make coffee the starter if gore is out? adding spiller will keep gore fresh and extend his career

Speed RB's like Jahvid Best and Dexter McCluster will available in the later rounds. But it's obvious people want the sexy(Spiller) pick which we don't need with a top 15 pick.
whats the chances, that IF Spiller does run in the 4.3 range, that he becomes (a top twelve pick?)and we miss himat 13?

What teams can nab him from us just before we pick?

I'll be
I'll take it. Get a OG in the second and we could have something.
when was the last time kiper's prediction on our draft picks came true?
The point is that we need 3 things out of our 3 picks in the top 49: help on the OL, playmaker with speed on offense and kick-returner combo, and help in the defensive backfield. There are several comparable RTs, several comparable DBs, but only one stand-out speed RB/RS, Spiller. We may not get him, he may jump up after the Combine, but like with Crabtree, we need to be ready in case he's there at 13. The other needs can be covered with our later picks. Even Kiper, who's not the brightest bulb on the tree (I think his hair sometimes interferes with his cerebral activity), can see that.
I'd love it. As long as we get a RT I'm happy. Spiller would be a bonus.
With all this hype about Spiller lately (and more to come after the combine), I wonder if he will even be around when it's our turn to pick.

Are their any teams that might swoop on him before us?

I don't see any mock drafts having him go higher than the us taking him, although he is rated the best RB in the draft.

Unless Gore is traded (which would be a colossal mistake), I honestly don't see the 49ers drafting a backup RB/part time player/return specialist in the 1st round.

Would any of you trade one of the 1st round picks for Joshua Cribbs? because that is exactly what you would be doing by drafting Spiller.

I wouldn't be mad at adding Spiller but it just doesn't seem like good value, imo. I'd rather draft Shipley or Arenas in the 3rd or 4th rounds if we need a return specialist.

I'm still predicting RT at either 13 or 16/17 and then best defensive player available, Iupati, or Clausen with the other pick.

yessir

Mel nailed this one...but if Spiller and Haden are both gone, I still say Singletary would likely get his OT first...then worry about BPA. He'd likely pick from among Warren, Odrick, possibly Graham (although it's hard to see him taking a pass rusher that early).

Haden is the clear number one DB and you think there are several comparable DBs but only one stand-out speed RB/RS, I've seen Jahvid Best play and he is similar to spiller.

Exactly this.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't look at it that way. I see it more like trading a first round pick for Percy Harvin or Felix Jones. Not a ton of touches a game, but enough to really make a difference in the win/loss column. I think it's worth it considering how bad our special teams play was last year.

Also, Gore is our guy at RB. No questions asked. But he's missed 2 games the past 2 seasons (3 this year if you count the Vikings game where he got hurt on the 1st drive). A Coffee/Spiller combination gives us a better chance to win games if Gore is down for a period of time; much better chance than Coffee/Robinson.

On his blog on ESPN, I think Mike Sando said taking Spiller would be a bit of a luxury pick, and I kinda agree. But 2 first round picks with the 2nd no later than 17 can allow us to make a move like this.

People were saying we didnt need a WR in the first last year and look at what Crabtree did. People said we didnt need a TE in the first when we got Davis. People said we didnt need a MLB in the first when we got Willis.

We already know that McLoughan is not big on drafting Guards in the first round. With the way that Ahmad Brooks came on last year, the pass rush is not as high of a priority. I think Kiper is right on with this one.
