Let's see who the real safety prospects are....

Time to clarify who the real prospects are at one of the Niners biggest areas of need. First of all Eric Berry is the real deal. Just this year, he has made 83 tackles, 1 FF, and 2 INT's. For his career however, Berry has 14 total INTs for almost 500 yds in return yardage. This guy would be a fantastic pickup, but he will be long gone by the time we pick unless there is another Crabtree miracle in store for the Niners. Second, Taylor Mays is completely overrated. So far, this year he has made 88 tackles with ZERO FF's and ONE INT. Not exactly the production you would expect from a top prospect. For his career, the numbers don't get any better. In four seasons, he has only ONE FF and 5 INT's. Sure, he has the physical tools, but apparently no instincts. Third, Earl Thomas out of Texas should be in the discussion. This year alone, he has 57 tackles, one FF, and EIGHT INT's of which 2 he returned for TD's. In two years, he has 5 FF and 10 INT's total. If he comes out, this guy would be an ideal mid 1st round selection to add to the Niners secondary. There other guys like Darrell Stuckey Kansas, Reshad Jones Georgia, Nate Allen USF, and TJ Ward Oregon that are in the mix as well. Let's start thinking outside the mainstream media and get Taylor Mays out of our heads.

I like VaTech's Kam Chancellor as a SS to pair with Goldson (FS). Kam has the size to be a force in the box (6'4", 230), but has also played some FS and isn't totally lost in coverage.

Probably somewhere in the 4.5 - 4.6 range. But for a big SS, that's not bad at all...

Myron Rolle from Florida State.

It will be interesting to see what kind of impact a year away from football has had on his ability. But this kid would have been the top safety last year if he had entered the draft. He could be a steal in the 2nd or 3rd round. He will be at the combine, and MadDog said he may be at the Senior Bowl. If he performs well at those two events he could shoot up a lot of teams boards.

I wouldn't be shocked if he was picked in the 2nd, but I think he's more of a 3rd round talent overall.

I tried not to overload everyone with stats, but some of the other safety prospects out there have been brought up. The list is actually pretty lengthy:

Kam Chancellor VA Tech
Robert Johnson Utah
Morgan Burnett GA Tech
Major Wright Florida
Myron Rolle Florida St
Josh Pinkard USC
Kurt Coleman Ohio St
Kyle McCarthy Notre Dame

Point being, the Niners should have plenty of choices/chances to solidify a position of need. My hope is they add a SS who can hit but has some speed to cover if needed.
