"He thought he was good enough that he didn't have to study as much as a rookie (does)," a team source said of Clinton-Dix's mindset the last two seasons. "He's guessing (in pass coverage). He's thinking that's how you get paid."
It's true that Clinton-Dix has his moments of excellence, like his impressive interception of Buffalo rookie quarterback Josh Allen in Week 4 this year. On that play, Clinton-Dix held his deep zone until Allen threw outside, then made a strong break on the ball and knocked receiver Kelvin Benjamin out of the game while making a tough, physical interception.
But then there are the big plays where he freelanced and gave up points.
But after a Pro Bowl season in 2016 he lost his edge, fell in love with the idea that he's a playmaker and turned into a gambler at a position that punishes gamblers.

If Ha Ha doesn't change his game, we will see what DeMeco Ryans values in his safeties - solid play versus big play ability. Ryans just talked about how he's all about turnovers. Ha Ha gambles to create turnovers, and he's shown he can get them, but with that comes occasionally surrendering the big play.

Good post — might be a decent pairing with Ward who has good range and is usually on top of where to be. And maybe the year off will give HaHa some perspective and he can play within the framework a little more than when he was younger. Like NY said above, pretty solid signing for this time of year IMO.

Short video from a Dallas fan when Dix signed there:

That's Voch Lombardi, he knows his football.

so he's an ankle biter.

How do people come out of Alabama with that kind of pedigree with tackling form like that?

So that's why people don't love him as a SS.

Why don't they like him at FS?

Can't really count stats when comparing a guy who can't stay on the field to one who can unless it's a per game basis. Plus IIRC He struggled allot in GB after his good year because he thought he was so good he didn't need to play within the system… and he sucked. He would have one good play for an int and give up 5 because he would do his own thing at a position where unless your name is Polomalu or Ed Reed, you're gonna fail hard.

Health wise Dix is way better, but all things equal when they are both on the field… Tartt is a way better SS and it showed when he wasn't on the field in 2019 which missed him as a clean up artist.

But unless Dix shows he can finally adhere to a system, get his ego in check and realize he's not a HOFer who can gamble on every play… he's camp fodder regardless of his resume. Which is why he was still on the streets.

from that video it looks to me like this guy stays healthy by avoiding tackling people. Ward and Tartt throw themselves at dudes.

good stuff man, answers my question.

So then the Bears moved him to SS where he bit ankles.

Then he got a bigger deal to play for his old HC in Dallas and got cut before the season started. Such a trip!

Now I hear that Jefferson is still hobbling a bit from his rehab. Sounds like that is going to be a weak spot in the defense. Bosa and Ford need to put lot's of pressure on the QB or those guys are going to get burned.

safety has always been the weak spot since Hitner and Goldson/Reid left.

Don't @ me about Ward.

I agree. Reid never lived up to the pedigree either.

Nobody touches Hitner. Niner HOF IMO.

Lol those safeties weren't that good either tbh. They had a sweet DLine to help make their lives easier. Once Justin Smith got hurt in 2012, our secondary was dog meat

I agree, but the thing is they looked good with the front 7 we had during those harbaugh years.they were hitters and put fear in those running in their area.

to me ward and tartt have never looked that good even in 2019.
Can't match Dwight Hicks and his Hot Licks. Hicks at free safety. Williamson at strong safety. Lott and Wright at the corners. They had 23 INTs with 13 coming from the safeties. Three rookies starting on a team that won the SB. Four years later, all 4 made the Pro Bowl. Wish we could duplicate that.

All 4 are going to reunite this weekend along with Defensive coach George Seifert. I'd love to be at that reunion. Imagine the stories they can tell.

Looking forward to a Twitter clip of him making an INT with the caption: 'Russell Wilson thought he could complete this pass. HaHa.'
Haha is no match for a roided up DJ Metcalf.

It's the best niners can do tho for now.

They are better at coverage though. Both Donte and Goldson were pretty average covering. Reid could've been solid if he stayed healthy.

Average is being nice. Whitner was a pretty typical SS whose main asset was hitting hard. Goldson was the same deal more or less, he just played FS.

Reid started out nice, but teams also figured out he wasnt a good coverage guy. He had speed at least. Still, I get nightmares from NFCCG when he took a horrendous angle on the Lynch run In today's game, Reid is a SS and Whitner/Goldson might not be able to start as opposite coaches would target the hell out of them.

This. We had a damn good Dline then. You'd think our DBs would be feasting. I just don't see that out of our current secondary.
