You know, I was having a conversation with I guy I coach with and we both suspected that it seems like the 49ers will are gonna deploy a 3-3-5. This means that we're likely gonna carry only 9 on the D-line instead of the 10 I initially predicted. In a 3-3-5 I think Law and Alexander will be replaced by Al-Shaair and Williams, and a D-lineman replaced by Harris or Cyprien to lurk the middle of the field. If Ford, AA, and Bosa (or AA, Kinlaw, and Bosa) can generate any kind of passrush, or at least push the pocket, in the 3-3-5 this defense will be just impossible to handle.

Saleh should be fired on the spot if he did that.

Why? You don't think we're gonna run 3-3-5? If so how would you personnel it?

The strength of this defense is the DL and a 3-3-5 removes one. The team is committed to keep things simple when it comes to the fronts they use, and they have adopted the wide9. Can they run a 3-3-5 on occasion? Maybe but I don't think I saw it last season, and I am fairly confident that they will not use it as any kind of change up to their defense. The part of your post I disagreed with is removing Greenlaw or Kwon for Al-Shaair. Why would he remove one of his better LBs (Kwon/Greenlaw) for a worse LB (Al-Shaair)? If Saleh wants more pass coverage he will put in a third safety and remove a LB, not remove a DL. The 49ers are a 4 man front team. I guess we'll see but I'd be very surprised if Saleh did this.

That's what I'm talking about - on occasion, not as a go-to adjustment. And I don't think we ran it at all last season. If we run a 3-3-5 (again on occasion) a DL will have to come off the field, unless you drop one in coverage, which defeats the coverage purpose. My thinking for taking out Greenlaw or Alexander for Williams, along with the S in the middle (big nickle) was to have better guys in coverage with speed.

But I do agree about the 4 man front commitment. In no way am I saying that a 3-3-5 is going to be our go-to adjustment. I, too, will be shocked if Saleh did it, at least for teams other than air-raid teams. But if he did (occasionally) I think it might look like that. That's all I was saying.

Gotcha. I did see the 49ers use a 5 man front on occasion last season to help defend the Rams outside zone runs so Saleh will throw wrinkles in. I guess I shouldn't speak with certainty what Saleh will and won't do. Maybe he does add more layers to this defense with more variation and complexity.

This is another place where my mind was. The defense is returning everyone but Buckner, and I think we adequately addressed that. When defense have that much continuity and returning players is the best time to add new wrinkles, new looks, and new concepts to add to their base scheme. I saw that when Saleh ran basically a 5-2 with a cover 2 shell and 5-1 nickle, and I was shocked when I saw it. You just don't see too many 5 man fronts in the NFL.

In any event, I do think Saleh (and Shanny) will definitely some new wrinkles, that's for sure.

Agree big time with the bolded. Saleh should take advantage of that, self scout, and see what he can add to he playbook. Mainly, returning the MIKE (Warner) and both safeties - positions that are considered to be on field coaches - should allow for new wrinkles to be added with less risk.

Seems like a strong safety type. I thought the team wanted more interchangeable type safeties. Reading around, it appears Cyprien struggles with coverage and being in open space.

He's a pure box safety. Coverage awareness is non-existent.
Is this guy making the team? I like what I've been reading about him so far since he joined kind of late in the offseason.
Cam inman gave him props in todays paper for his play so we will see

May sound weird, but I think the only way he makes it on the 53 person roster is instead of 5th LB. This almost goes back to when Kyle and Saleh were trying to get Reid playing LB, lol. I just don't see them putting Harris on PS, he might not slip through the waivers this year.

Lol didn't this dude say he wouldn't accept a practice squad role? 😂 guess he likes us or likes having employment.

Or knows that tartt and Ward are injury prone and he may get playing time here over most other teams that have 2 safeties that aren't injured almost every year.

Also, we won't keep tartt next year bc he will cost at least 6-8 mil so he may get to be the starter next year

Never say never, I can see them keeping Tartt, I like the Safety duo of Ward and Tartt, but if Tartt walks, I think Moore gets the SS starting spot. He's more than ready to start.

I can't see moore as a SS. His skill set is more of a single-high FS imo. Same with Ward though (Ward is a better tackler though).

They're gonna have to draft a SS if Tartt is looking for cash, which I don't blame him.

They would not have to draft one especially if Cyprien is on the team still and we could mess around with Ward and Moore. I don't think there's anyway we re-sign tartt especially over Williams at tackle, Williams at nickel, Sherman, Kyle J

Yeah if we let any of those guys walk Tartt and Sherm are 1 and 2 on my list. Juice would hurt if Hoiket doesnt pan out and the Williams boys are a must sign.
