The waiver claim will also depend on his current contract. Will a team want to pick it up based on the current terms. If you wait to clear waivers then you can negotiate a new deal.

His contract has like $500k left on it. No one would sweat that.

I think this would be a great addition and insurance policy for dee ford. We need another edge rusher if we want to dominate in the playoffs. We need sacks and havok

Someone will likely claim him before the 49ers but if not..he'd be a great pickup. Clearly not much left and he got outplayed by the Karate Kid most of the time but his experience and vet savvy would be very welcome.

People like Bart Scott claimed that he only went to Arizona to cash a retirement check so he might well be motivated to play for an actual title contender.

I would expect Seattle or the Patriots to pick him up.

I thought waiver claims depend on the previous year record. Niners was the 2nd worse team last year..?

Unfortunately that's only @ our disposal for the 1st 3 weeks of the season. We're pretty much last in pecking order now due to our current record.

Should John Lynch be on the phone to check whether teams are considering releasing players the Niners might be interested in, then consider trading for them before the release? Could he have antiicpated Suggs' release?

Every year there are teams that claim players late in the season, largely out of spite. There are teams that will take a small cap hit to stop a player from getting to a divisional or conference rival.

Trade deadline was over a month ago. No trades allowed until the start of the new league year.
