In seriousness, I disagree with the assessment that our 2011 dbs weren't better than what we currently have. They weren't spectacular, but they were mostly solid. You don't need spectacular DBs if you have a pass rush, but they can't be incompetent and they have to be able to work as a unit to avoid blown coverages. Improving our pass rush will help, but if coverages are still being blown, the defense will still suck. See the Chiefs last year for an example of that. They had 3 of the best pass rushers in the league last year, but couldn't stop anybody.
The only good reason to bring Ward back is his versatility, but he's still just a backup quality player.
Even Earl Thomas wouldn't be able to mask how terrible our #2 CBs have played. Sherman doesn't get tested. The other guy just gets roasted.
We may need better safety, but it's hard to tell when they're constantly being pulled to bail out our pathetic CBs. Our safeties never stood a chance. Spoon isn't very good. He's improving, but he has a long way to go before you can consider him reliable.
I don't necessarily love the Ward signing, but I don't think Earl would've made a tremendous difference either. Verrert is the guy that can fix this thing.
Bringing Ward back at $5M... I've got no problems with that. That's peanuts in today's game.
