By every available statistical and analytical measure, Hyde was one of the better RBs in football last year. No, Williams isn't a better talent. Hyde coming out of college was a much better prospect and player. His frequency of injuries and piss poor run blocking are the only things which have limited him in the NFL.

Williams is a very good RB to have when you have a dominant OL blasting holes open for him. Hyde has been able to create yards largely independent of what the OL in front of him was doing and has ranked top 3 in the NFL in yards after contact for three straight seasons. That ability is what could put him out of the 49ers price range next year if he stays healthy which is the only major concern about him.

Having both backs makes the 49ers much better offensively much like how Atlanta benefited from having both Freeman and Coleman involved in the offense.

It is pretty clear however that the coaching staff sees Hyde as the #1 back going into the season.

He didn't show up when it counted. Teams probably just gave us some runs so that we could waste time and end the game faster.
Hopefully, this will finally be the year where our fastest running back doesn't get injured.

Not true but okay. Once again, REMEMBER the circumstances. IMO the circumstances always tend to paint the correct picture.

I thought he did well based on the circumstances last year. If you dont agree thats okay.. I dont know you personally and what your expectations are and we did have one of the best backs in NFL history to literally always give us a piece of mind for years, week in and week out.

He's an above avg RB when healthy but that is a big if surrounding his career and is even more under the microscope in his role where career length avg's are among the lowest in the league potentially due to all the wear and tear they see from the punishing hits they receive. I know PFF claims he's a superstar with their metrics or made up math just like they believe AA is a star pass rusher but common this team is neither invested in him for the long haul or have the outcome of this season tied to his health anymore. He's got some competition this year and even if he does have an above avg year for himself there is no reason for this team to need to invest too much money to keep him...in fact it might be more beneficial to let him go if he truly does start for most of this year and gain that comp pick his departure will create as we develop the guys Kyle specifically drafted for his offense. That said I don't want him to fail as the fate of our team is on everyone doing well.

Personally i think Joe will take snaps from him. Joe is legit. I dont necessarily think Hyde was the better or more talented prospect coming out either. Its just Williams had the mental red flags. I like Hyde, but he is always hurt, and has not been as impressive as the numbers lead one to believe IMO.

Hyde is a solid back, but this will be his last year as a 49er, and Williams will put up wayyyy more career yards IMO in the long run.

No because of this crazy answer: we have even faster players for that.

Who besides Bolden whose the most realistic option if he makes the 53.
