this. ridiculous.

Basically 2 non-violent offenses got a 16 game, and 14 game punishment.

Meanwhile a VIOLENT offender like Ray Rice get 2 game. 2 f**king games. OH!! but Goodell said that was a mistake, so it's all good I suppose.

It comes down to the pattern of behavior. I really think the incedent at the airport was the nail in the coffin. If Godell didn't believe rehab had any impact on Aldon he was unlikely to consider it when handing down the suspension.

Smart move by him also waiting till after he said he was wrong about ray rice to suspend aldon for that length.

What are you talking about? NO charges were filed in the "incident" you described. It boiled down to some petty he said/she said stuff.

That's why the DA didn't press forward with charges, because it would've been laughed out of court.

Correction, if he got caught smoking pot after having been caught several times before and suspended at least once previously, would he be suspended for a season. Aldon's never been suspended.
So much for Roger Goodell saying he will consider Aldons 5 games treatment into consideration

Speaking to reporters after a forum for European fans, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said that Smith's treatment will be considered when weighing any discipline.

"Yes, it will be a factor, for sure," Goodell said.

Wouldn't it be awesome if he did that and gave it to Aldon?

Yeah but then it'll just push it back past the first Seahawks game.

Prob why they waited to long to announce it.

Which could be a good thing, but also could be a bad thing. We may have him early in the season but I'm worried if he has to miss games in November.
9 games seems a bit excessive, but it's convenient for the Saints that it was a 9 game suspension and not 8.

I remember Ben got a 6 game suspension in 2010, and had it cut to 4. There's precedence for reducing suspensions with Goodell.

People with substance abuse issues will have their denial demolished once in rehab. They could be motivated to go because "there's hot chicks" there. It doesn't matter. A good rehab will get through to people more times than not. NFL players and anyone in any job in general, if they have substance abuse issues, should be encouraged to go to rehab not punished for it.

That's my point though. I don't think Goodell is concerned about encouraging players to go to rehab. He concerned with preventing the situation that would lead to a player going to rehab. His role is punitive as opposed to the FO who are in the position to encourage the player.
