They really screwed Garrard. To go until 2 days before the season kicks off and then just cut him really kills any chance of him finding a new team and playing this year. Also doesn't get paid.

Good luck to the Jags getting anyone to come as a free agent when they treat pretty decent veteran players like that.

Of course.

LoL. Funny huh?

He has been horribly inconsistent the past two years and his best days are behind him. Yet he wants to stick with guy who was horribly inconsistent the past two years and has never had best days.

Just baffles me how people view things.
I would pick him up in a heartbeat. Personally i would cut Kaep and keep Tolzein. Just my preference, but if Alex tanks then i could see Garrard as a nice stop gap until we can groom Tolzein or another young QB not on the roster.

And on another note, that's fugged up of Del Rio to release him right before the season started. Gives him absolutely no time to learn a playbook or get acclimated to a team. I don't see Del Rio as the HC next season, the guy has had way too many chances to do something with the team.

I don't think this adds up. Why would Del Rio want to weaken himself at the QB postition with his job on the line? Weaver didn't want to pay the 8 Million and Del Rio is being a good soldier taking the PR hit. Pretty messed up cutting him right after the chamber luncheon. I guess Nine West is getting hit hard by the recession, poor Wayne. All the more reason the jerk needs to sell to the LA folks and get out.

His game logs from the past two years are a little uneven but Garrard had a passer rating a little over 90 last year, completed almost 65% of his passes and threw 23 TDs to 15 picks. He has 6 games with a passer rating under 90 last year, while having 10 games over 90 (5 over 100). Alex Smith looks to be a little bit more consistently below average.

Of course the numbers can be illusory, Smith's numbers looked great in that Philly game last year, 300+ yds passing, 92.8 QB rating and we all know the boneheaded garbage he pulled in that game.

Do you EVER see anything except through your anti-Alex filter?

I could ask you; why, since you hate Alex so much, would you want to bring in another wildly inconsistent player?

The issue is that at this time of the season, even if he were more consistent, Garrard would have almost no time to learn the system and bring it to the field. I like David Garrard as a person. He is a man of character and very solid in his personal life, but the timing to bring him into this team now is not good.
I'm for picking up David Garrard...I'm sick of losing...getting a proven starter in this league(barring he is not injured) might be what this team needs to get out of the land of suckiness...we have all the skilled positions locked down but QB has been a question mark for way to long...Garrard is 33 yrs...I'm sure he has 2-3 yrs left while we bring along a young QB....Smith should of left this organization ..not that i have anything against the dude..but sometimes you can stay a little longer than you should....I thought his time was up but he let coach talk him into staying...which is admirable...but at the same time ..he is at such a disavantage with the lockout that occured this year...even if he starts playing well towards the end of the season and shows a little promise...will anyone actually believe that he finally arrived??We would be going into next year with question marks once again at this position....the only way for Smith is to play lights out and drive this team to the playoffs ..and i just don't see it right now....this guy get's rattled if you hit him in the mouth early in games....if he doesn't get hit he seems to settle in pretty well but if he gets hit early in games...he plays horrible and seems unsure of himself....good QBs can overcome this....Smith hasn't shown that....We need a proven QB and I will back who ever is here but I hope they give Garrard a look.....

Its funny you ask me about my so called "anti-Alex filter." The reason its so funny to me is because the only filter I have is the "die hard Niner fan filter" or the "sick of losing filter."

IMO, anyone who is against us bringing in Garrard has a "support Alex til I die filter." I mean, what other reason could there be to not want to bring in a clear cut upgrade at the QB position.

As for your time frame concern, bring him in as the second stringer. Give him 4-5 weeks to learn the offense. By that time (going off of history and odds), Alex will have failed numerous times by then, and we will actually have a serviceable NFL quality starter to put in.
the 49ers are obviously building towards the future. Why would they sign Garrard? They can't cut Tolzien for several more weeks, I believe. Who would they cut to carry 4 QB's? Garrard is decent but he will have better options than us, and I really can't fathom why we would be interested in him.

Like it or not Harbs has committed to riding it out with Smith this year and keeping young QB's behind him to develop for the long-term. Garrard coming in at the last minute is not better than an Alex that has been preparing all summer for this offense. And his coming in would bump out a young QB who projects as a good backup long-term and someone who could possibly challenge for the starting job. We need a QB who can start for the next 10-15 years. Garrard isn't it; he's basically Alex at this point, and we already have one of those.

our team is incredibly young. That means the future. Garrard and Smith are roughly equivalent caliber of quarterbacks at this stage, except that Smith is more prepared to start for this offense. Really really hard to understand why anyone would be excited for us to bring in Garrard.
^^^There is a difference though...Garrard actually has been successful in this league....if it about the young guys...wouldn't you rather them learning from a guy who has been successful than a guy who just can't seem to get it right??....I've never bashed Alex and stuck with him for a long time but I'm at the point where I just want W's at any cost...I'm not expecting Garrard to be here for more than 2-3 yrs but if it gets us wins!?! I'm all for it....Whatever they plan to do I'm all for but it just amazes me how the little decisions made can change a season....If we don't draft kap we probably can pick up Garrard right now and who knows....If we don't resign Smith...same thing!...Just these little decisions can really put your franchise back.......I'm intrigued by this Tolzien as well so I wouldn't like to see him cut or try to move him to the PS cause I'm sure he would probably be picked up by someone....

Yeah his last two years were better then any year of Smith's career. Its either Smith, Gerrard, and Kaep or Smith, Kaep and Tolzani.

Id rather have Gerrard.

what will they learn from Garrard? I don't understand the "QB as mentor idea." Garrard isn't a coach, so he's not really going to teach them much, IMO. Also, I'm not sure at this point (coming in this late, etc) that Garrard can get us more wins than Smith.

I think that just because a player has had some success in the league doesn't mean that pulling him off the scrap heap is going to lead us to more success. We would have to cut a developmental player like Ian Williams or Colin Jones or something to have a rental of a mediocre QB. Since this franchise is building for the future, and since Garrard doesn't, IMO, give us a better chance to compete than Alex, I see no reason to bring him in.
