Well, my theory is that if we are never going to have wide receivers lead the team in receptions, we might as well sign more tight ends to lead the team's passing attack. Makes sense to me.
We can run the same formation for runs and passing, so defenses will never know what's coming. We can call an audible from one to the other easily since our tight ends will be in to block or go out for a pass.
With three tight ends on the field, we could run the ultimate overload rush with three lead TE blockers (one split out to the strong side receiving slot), the strong side tackle, a pulling guard and a fullback. Imagine Iupati, Anthony Davis, VD, Delanie, Zack Miller and whoever we have at fullback now clearing a path for Frankie. It'd be like trying to stop a bulldozer.
