Good news for us. I wonder if they play to rotate Franklin and Sopoaga at NT, and Sopoaga, McDonald, and Smith at DE.

Keep the full D-line fresh.

Sopoaga is a great run stuffer, McDonald is a better pass-rusher. This may allow us to use an intriguing rotation where we place Justin Smith at the elephant end/WILL position. He played standing up fairly frequently in various packages for us last year so it shouldn't be a major problem.

If Franklin re-signs, we may see a lot of this:

Sopoaga----Franklin----McDonald
Aldon-------Bowman------Willis------Justin Smith

With Justin playing close to the line, in a sort of 3-4/4-3 hybrid.

I can totally see this happening. Fangio's defense is very versatile and I bet he will do anything in terms of formations and lining up players to create pressure.

And I really hope he blitzes Willis more often. He wasn't used very often in that area, but each time he was, he either got a sack or applied pressure.

If nothing else this will give the niners good depth on the line.
If the 49ers do re-sign Aubrayo Franklin, I hope he and Isaac Sopoaga compete to be the starting NT. Don't just hand Franklin the job... Game On!

It would be a short competition. Franklin is much better than Soap.

My hope is that Larry Grant is an even better TED than a 4-3 WLB, and if so, what would be even more exciting to see is something like this:

Sopoaga----Franklin----McDonald/Justin

Bowman/Brooks/Applewhite----Grant------Willis------Justin Smith/Aldon/Haralson
Actually tonight . .

Franklin may be mediocre, but he's adequate for what you'd want/expect out of a 3-4 Nose Tackle (just push the gaps for the pass-rushers), and there's no guarantee McDonald can fill his spot easily.
well the eagles are also interested in Franklin and they just cut one of there high paid DT Broderick Bunkley ... so maybe they know something we don't know about Aubreyo Franklin coming to them.

Don't the Eagles run a 4-3 though?

Don't matter.

They already signed Cullen Jenkins.
They did sign Cullen Jenkins but their reported interest in Franklin came after they signed Jenkins ... they are free agent crazy right now.

OTC, normally I feel like you are spot on with your posts...but Smith as an OLB?

Didn't we try that a couple of years ago and realize that Smith is best suited for a 4-3 DE and 3-4 DE positions?

Close... we decided he was best inside in our 4 man front.

Different DC, though. Never know.

Correction, best as a 4-3 DE/DT and 3-4 DE.

Better?
