Report: Panthers interested in Asante Samuel

Citing a league source, the Charlotte Observer reports that the Panthers are interested in trading for Asante Samuel.
The connection is obvious because Sean McDermott, new Panthers defensive coordinator, held the same role in Philly last year. McDermott has been collecting former Eagles, including LB Omar Gaither and S Sean Considine. If any team can take on Samuel's large base salaries and cap numbers, it's the Panthers, even after they re-signed so many of their pending free agents. Carolina also has a need at the position after losing Richard Marshall.

Even the Panthers are making moves...
he is worth a third....we couldnt find a cb in the third round that is even close to him......for a few years at least 3-4 and that is definitely worth a third round pick. Hell i dont think there has ever been a third round cb that good in recent history.....maybe 20 years.

I think its worth the risk, but then again our front office might actually think our third round pick will be as good as samuel next year.....as dr evil would say.....RRRRRRIIIIIIIGGGGGGHHHHTTTTTTT

Really?

49ers FO seemed busy during the off-season of '06-'08. Only thing is most of those free agent acquisitions didn't pan out.

I heard we aren't interested in Cromartie? So Asante maybe? but who else?
For what Asante Samuel is making this year and I believe he has another year under contract I think the Niners should definitely be trying to trade for him. I know many people are saying that he doesn't fit our system but flat out the guy can cover and intercept the ball...WAY better than anybody we got on our team right now. I really hope they are looking into doing this!

If the Niners can get Samuel, find someone for FS (Goldson, Whitner) and get Franklin back and a good price...Fangio will be able to work with this defense.

No, it's all just a ruse... They have to make room under the cap to extend Jackson. Andy Reid, the best BSer in the league next to Belichick, is trying to get something ridiculous for him. I've read some rumors that they’re asking for a high profile player in return rather than draft picks. Ill informed Eagle fans on twitter have been reporting the 49ers are rumored to be offering up Patrick Willis for Samuels. No chance in hell that’s happening and judging the way things have been going, we're probably not even in the mix anyway. Wouldn't be surprised to see the Eagles cut him on Thursday when the league year starts.
