What Is the Niner's Strategy Re A. Franklin?

IMO it sets us back big time if we lost Franklin. I agree some team may overspend for him and I don't want to see the 9ers give him anything beyond 3 years guaranteed. However how much would it suck if AF walked and we had to spend our #7 pick on a NT to replace him? Then we wouldn't get anywhere with the real needs of this team QB/OLB/CB

I'd like to have him back, but we cant overpay for his services and have him get lazy on us

True, but sometimes you are forced to over pay. Especially with this weird off season and the lockout. But more them him getting lazy is the fact that he's now on the wrong side of 30. gonna be really tricky to work out a good deal with Franklin.
Definitely gets trickier now that the draft has passed and we did nothing for the DL.

I still don't like the idea of handing him a long contract with lots of guaranteed cash. That's what he is looking for in FA and his agent is betting a NT-needy team will overpay him.

Maybe now we are desperate enough to reconsider.. but I wouldn't do it. I think he's all about the guaranteed cash, and will become a lazy turd once he gets that contract.
Maiocco seems to feel that if Franklin won't play ball with us that we can move Sop over to NT since his technique has improved in the last couple of years and have RJF back him up. That brings up the question of whether McDonald is ready for LDE? Then who do we get to back up McDonald, and Smith? Lots of dominoes around Franklin.

Why did the Niners not tender an offer to A. Franklin? Are they unhappy with his play? Is his price tag too high? Do they think they can resign him at a lower price? Is RJF ready? What is happening here?

Agreed. One of the big reasons why the 9ers D were in the top 10 last season.
They must know something because they didn't even sniff a NT in the draft. I was annoyed.

As was I, there isn't a starting NT on the roster right now, now that Franklin is most likely going to walk. I really doubt we would be trading for one anytime soon. And if/when free agency starts, its slim pickings Paul Soliai was our best bet.
Maybe they have a wink, wink, nod arrangement with Franklin... but I doubt it. Guess we just have to sit back and expect that they have a plan. Otherwise, why would they neglect such a crucial 3-4 position. In convenient hindsight, would have perhaps been happier going with:

1. Robert Quinn (OLB)
2. Brandon Harris (CB)
3. Jurrell Casey (NT)
4. Kendall Hunter (RB)
4. Ricky Stanzi (QB)
then trade up for:
5. Anthony Sherman (FB)
6. Tyler Sash (S)
7. Zane Taylor (C)
7. Ian Williams (NT)
Franklin is the only 'real' established NT scheduled to become a free agent, there will be a good amount of teams calling.
Maybe we can find another "Franklin" sitting behind a star NT in the league.

While we were picking OLs and WR, I was expecting a NT. This appears to be the biggest unmet need. Not sure what the thinking is here.
