What Is the Niner's Strategy Re A. Franklin?

Why did the Niners not tender an offer to A. Franklin? Are they unhappy with his play? Is his price tag too high? Do they think they can resign him at a lower price? Is RJF ready? What is happening here?

Couldnt agree more
Probably assumed that his play would deteriorate as he ages, and the price tag would be too high to justify bringing him back. Wouldn't be surprised if we got a FA NT and brought RJF along. During camp, RJF was the killing it, and then during the season he disappeared.
Can Franklin be tendered? I was under the impression players who have been in the league for more than 5 years can't be RFA.
Franklin can only be franchised (at a VERY high price), and not tendered as a RFA, given his years of service.

IMO the niners think his asking price is too high (probably too many years) once he hits the open market hopefully he will find out our front office was right, and then take our deal. If some team wants to throw a lot of money at him, or guarantee him a long term deal, let him go. Franklin is good and is important to our team now, but is not worth the huge amount the franchise tag is worth for DTs and is getting up there in age and most likely wont be producing like he is after signing a big deal as well as 3 years from now

Franklin did not play at all in Baltimore. The only years he has on him are in SF.

The 49ers would like to have a true 2-gap player at NT. Franklin is a 1-gap guy who has played quite well considering he isn't the prototypical guy. Still, it looks like they are prepared to let him walk if he gets a high offer from someone else.

About half the teams in the league run a 3-4. He will get some nice offers. Let's hope he doesn't. RJF is about the same kind of player but not as effective.

He never started for them but he played quite a bit for them in his last 2 seasons there. And I think the Redskins will overpay for him.
Personally, I believe the 49ers have to plan on not having him. There only real options at NT beyond him are Soapoga and RJF, neither of whom excite me all that much. However if they could get a stud DE early enough that can contribute then maybe they could move Soap to NT.

The only real early draftable NT is Phil Taylor, and # 7 is too early and he won't be there when we draft in the 2nd round.
Niners? Strategy? What's that?
Both. He showed his true colors this season. He knew he was getting franchise money and showed up out of shape and for most of the season he played like the backup he's been most of his career.

He's not a youngin' either. Let someone else overpay for him. We could do better in the draft. Guys like Taylor, Powe and K. Ellis are more physically gifted and should be great replacements. Fua would be a nice alternative to develop as well, but he looks more like a 2-gap NT. We need a 1-gap, wide body in the middle. We've neglected this for far too long, IMO.

If anything, RJF needs to slide out to DE and we throw Soap at back to NT. We could go the free agency route and look at Cullen Jenkins or Chris Hoke and draft a guy to learn behind him.
honestly i wouldn't mind dareus to replace franklin if both peterson and miller were gone. it may not be his most natural position but i think he would be a very effective, explosive, 3 down NT for many years
