I was going to mention Pennington, but I was afraid of being flamed by the board. Folks bag on Mel Kiper, but he said he would not walk, he would have run to the podium to lock in Pennington, when he thought they should thave drafted Chad. The Niners took Julian Peterson instead.

Hasn't he had a lot of injuries lately? He seemed to be playing pretty well 2 years ago and then got hurt, again. He won't be any help if he is injured all the time.

I'm not sure he can be a starter any longer with all the injuries. However, I would love to have him as the backup and a mentor to a young QB that we draft this year.

I just want an accurate QB who isn't afraid of throwing passed 20 yards.

i forgot about pennington. he would be worth checking out, definitely, but i have a feeling he's done. too many shoulder problems. however, if he does have something left, he would be a pretty solid stop gap guy while we groom a young qb.

If we dumped Carr and had him as the backup/possible starter, depending on who else we brought in/drafted, I'd be fine with it.
But I wouldn't want him as someone assured of the starter job with no other options besides Carr or a mid-round or later pick.
We have seen that Carr is past his days of playing if we need someone on a weekly basis and Pennington is at best a gamble to stay healthy in that role.

So when he passes a physical and gets sacked in preseason and breaks in two then what?

Chad Pennington is a very realistic option. If he could be medically cleared to play then, I would love to have him. Maybe also sign a Tarvaris Jackson or a Bruce Gradkowski to push for starting job. Keep the rookie QB at third string to learn.

Not a bad idea. He reminds me a lot of Garcia and how he was crafty and tough with good intangible skills, although not all that physically gifted with the big arm. I believe the 49ers actually put in a claim for Gradkowski when he was let go by the Browns but the Raiders had the worse record at the time and were awarded him. But not a bad idea IMO.
