I'll keep my expectations low so I am not let down if we don't come out guns a blazing in FA.

yep..you are right.....piss on the likes of Julius Peppers.....Niner's couldn't have used him......all about the system.

You wanted to pay 16 mil a year to the guy who had 8 sacks? 3 of which came in one game against a terrible team. Who's going to the superbowl? The teams built through the draft(GB and Pitt) or the teams built on FA/trade(Chi and NYJ)?

agreed, plus Peppers said no to the 3-4 idea, if i remember correctly.

Plus 80M or whatever it was is not worth it.

The free agent list is a long one. The very second they can, I think they will go after everyone. I wouldn't be surprised if we land some serious names. Players typically only go places for two reasons. Number one of the two is all about the money. This is not always the case, but it is a business after all.
The number two reason is the state of the franchise. In our case, at least at the surface, our situation appears optimistic (not to say that any other team is expressing pessimism when they are going after FA's).

Having a new coach and a new system spells nightmare 90% of the time, but this time it feels different, maybe its blind hope.

The NFC West is a weak division filled with a lot of possible vacant starting spots. The only left question is:

"Who will be the better salesman this off season?"

Only time will tell.

Dunno if you are being sarcastic or not but Peppers has never played OLB in a 3-4 so we can't know for sure how well he would have transitioned though I think he could make the transition. However I could be wrong.

You also have to consider that some players won't want to come here, we have no control over that. You can make offers and try to sell them but it is up to the player to decide if they want to buy. Case in point, the 9ers tried to get Adalius Thomas a few years back and Nolan and Sing had the familiarity with him but he did not want to go west, he wanted to play for the Pats, and rumor had it we offered more cash.

Well I guess I am just a rednecked simple Simon from VA...but my philosophy is......can the man play football? Don't give a rat's arse about 3-4, 4-3 , can the man play the game.....and play it well......

Ok, great. Nice to meet you Simon, how's the weather in VA on this fine day ?

Scheme does matter, as does the team you play for and where that team is situated, who is coaching it, who owns it, how much they would be willing to pay you etc. Sometimes it's only 1 or 2 of those things that matter sometimes it's more.

In Peppers case, he said he wanted to play in a 3-4, he also said he was open to being traded to 4 teams, 2 in the NFC south, Dallas and an AFC team. So he didn't really seem to have any interest in playing here from what we knew.

Okay.....you win.......again.....piss on making a push for any quality FAs that could be an impact player. Let's continue to sign players that are second and third rate role players thus sinking further into mediocrity. Money talks........BS walks......and as far as I am concerned this team has been full of BS from the top down, especially when it comes to FA.

I generally agree with this sentiment, but at the same time FA can work out very well, if the money is spent correctly. You seem to forget that GB spent big money in 06' FA on Charles Woodson. That seems to have worked out very well for them. I also think its flawed logic to used CHI and NYJ as examples of why teams should not use FA or as teams who have failed in FA. These 2 teams just went to the conference championship, some would consider that a successful year. A better example would be WAS.
