He is a player we would have to overpay to get. Considering he brings exactly what we need on table to the defense, it may not be a bad idea, but how much would we have to overpay to get him to leave Pittsburgh? And is it worth it as opposed to drafting a pass rusher in the 1st round (I'm not expecting Newton to be available now with Luck staying put)?

If we stay in the 3-4 yes.
But there is NO WAY that Pitt would let him walk. They will retain him.

hes a free agent, but if the Steelers dont work out a deal with him I think they will tag him easily. You build through the draft.

When it comes to LB's Pitt knows exactly where to find them and what to do with them. If they see another LB in the mid rounds or later in the draft that they know can step in and make plays for Dick Labaeu, Woodley will be expendable because of what he may be seeking in a contract.
If he is, I wouldn't mind going after him. We need a pass rusher which is something we haven't had in years so instead of taking a chance on a 1st round guy and paying him similar money, might as well go after a guy who has been a PROVEN threat in the NFL

yes we will have to overpay him but thats just free agency. Pit has already said they are not giving him a contract. I think we should sign him and then draft someone in the first 3 rounds for the opposite side. Fangio is gonna be coordinator and he is a dom capers disciple so that means lots of blitzing from the OLB

Really Pitt isnt goin to resign him? that makes things alot more realistic on us snatching him up. however it would already be fairly expensive to get him and with the CBA the way it is i dont see the 9ers trying to hard for him. i see us building more so through the draft this first year then maybe hiiting free agency next offseason.

That guy is wrong, Pitt never said they werent going to resign him, just that they couldnt resign him THIS year because of the CBA and the 75% rule If the new CBA has a franchise tag, this guy is getting it.
The silly talk about 'Pitt can just replace him and thus wont pay him' is bull too. They had no problem handing James Harrison 48 million and he was 4 years older than Woodley is now. Woodley will get paid by Pitt either way. Him coming to SF is a pipe dream, Im sorry.

This. They will sign him to an extension or franchise him. But, on the other hand, Pitts doesn't over-pay their guys, so you never know.

I would love to have Woodley on our team playing opposite Brooks. Is it worth it to sign him rather than a premiere CB in Nnamdi? I think a consistent pass rush would help our current Cb's a ton and make our defense consistent. I can't see Pit not resigning him but stranger things have happened in the NFL.
Does anyone have a list of other FA OLBers? Specifically pass rushing specialists.

Man, I wanted us to draft him SO BAD when he was coming out of college. If we could land him I would do the Baalke dance of joy.
