IMO, this would be the best scenario. After all he looked most confident in Turner system.
I dont see how this would be the best scenario for him unless of course he wants to just ride the pine for the rest of his career. Rivers will be around a while. Alex will have ZERO chance at starting.
His best chances to be a starter are TEN, CAR, ARI, and SEA. Woops, Carroll thinks more of Nate Davis than he does of Matt Leinart and Alex Smith.
Alex Smith isn't technically an FA yet...correct? I'm confused.
Well, if we don't make him a fair offer that he doesn't agree with, then he will no longer be a 49ers. If that doesn't scream FA, then I don't know what does.
My point was he cant get any offers from other teams because he's still a 49er on paper. Or am I mistaken?
After free agency begins he's a free agent. But that is still a almost couple months away. Until then he is a 49er and the 49ers are free to resign him.
That's if we get a labor agreement, which is looking unlikely as crazy as that sounds.

They can resign him today if they wanted. NFL teams are free to resign/extend their own players until they become free agents in March. Once they become free agents, that's the point in time that no one can sign with anyone (until there is a new CBA).

A few weeks ago, I thought it was almost impossible for Alex to remain in SF. Once Harbaugh was hired, however, that might have gotten Alex thinking that this guy would provide him with a more QB friendly situation, one in which he could prosper.
Also as time went on his anger toward the fans in the stadium may have diminished.
Secondly, Harbaugh has had time to think about where he goes from here, and probably realized that the crop of available QBs as FAs or through trades was weak.
Even though we do not know who initiated the face-to-face meeting, the fact that they both were willing to meet increased the possiblity.
I would say the probability has increased from 5% to 50%.

You really believe he has s 50% chance of resigning ?
Come on man be realistic.
If you were him why would want to come back. When 70,000 people booo you on incomplete passes no way in hell you want to come back.
The real chances of him coming back is less then 1%.

Exactly. I like how all the Alex supporters will find any sort of hope they can. Even if it's just Jed and Harbaugh being politically correct.
Its okay guys, you can hope. Just don't hope too much. Your boy ain't comin back.

You don't think he'd go somewhere where he could compete for the starting job?

The other day, Ronnie Lott was interviewed on KNBR. One of the interesting things he said was that Walsh liked Montana because he always seemed to play with a chip on his shoulder.
Alex always seemed too immature, submissive and passive during his early years here. Perhaps success had come to him too easily during high school and college.
Ever since, he's had it pretty tough. Trying to play as a rookie with poor coaching and woeful talent surrounding him. Then there was the separated shoulder and his epxerience with Nolan. Then a second another year on IR and another surgery.
He had been growing older, but I think this last season was a turning point. He had to deal with with a number of problems he did not create at the beginning of the season. Crabtree missed all preseason - again. He was stuck with Raye, who was not getting the plays in quickly enough during the preseason and during the Seattle game. He complained that the playcalling was so predicatble that the opposing defense knew what they would run. He was dealing with three O linemen who were new at their postion, as well as Rachel. It is one thing to deal with one underperforming O linmen, but four?
He had to play against NO, ATL, KC, and PHIL during his first five games. He was being yelled at by Sing on national TV. Then he experienced another shoulder seperation in CAROL, then benched for Troy, then jerked into and out of the lineup. He was abused by fans and media alike all season.
I think Alex now has a chip on his shoulder the size of the Grand Canyon. He is pi**ed. Harbaugh may like the edge he has now - no more nice guy. This kid wants blood. We say he won't play here because the fans will boo him? Then you guys do not understand this kid's toughness. We expect a QB to not be affected by noisy fans in an away game. Why then can't he function in a booing home stadium?
In sum, he may be willing to stay, and H. may want him as his interim QB.

I like it that there is a percentage value associated with the topic. I do the same thing, so I'm not judging. It's funny... it's just the easiest way to communicate your meaning.
Also, susweel... you want Alex Smith to resign.
Excelsior wants Alex Smith to re-sign.

Hopefully on any of the other 31 teams not named the San Francisco 49ers.

As much as you would like to think that, it is not true. He is still the soft-spoken QB, chip on shoulder or not, that doesn't seem to have a lot of confidence in his playmaking ability.
It took Vernon yapping at him at the Eagles game for him to talk back to Sing. I think he is being PC right now and entertaining the idea of coming back, but the discension between the fans and Alex is reason enough for him to leave. I am one who does not want to see "Smith" and "#11" on the same jersey again in 2011...

I dont see how this would be the best scenario for him unless of course he wants to just ride the pine for the rest of his career. Rivers will be around a while. Alex will have ZERO chance at starting.
Sit back awhile and relearn and learn more of Norv's system. Play spot duty, and gain some trade value back. After going through a roller coaster in San Francisco, why would you rush back into the fire??

Yeah true. I just think because of the weak FA QB options out there he'd basically he the "best of the rest." And other than Andrew Luck there are no sure shots in the draft. I just figured he could go to any team in need of a QB and at least compete. There are a lot of teams with QB issues. Chicago, after today showed they need a viable back up and insurance policy for Cutler. Sure Cutler would be a starter but Alex would be more effective than the statue of Collins. Plus who knows with Cutler. I don't think he's a "lock" in the same way Rivers is in SD.
Basically my point is if Alex goes somewhere to back up it will be a team where the starter isn't very popular, shaky situation, and has a decent shot at starting at some point soon. At least thats what I'd do if I were him.

Who knows, it only takes one injury to be out for the year, and Alex could be called up at any time. San Diego has the #1 offense and #1 defense, not to mention a HC that you are very familiar with. That's just my opinion if I were Smith looking for the right situation.

If you guys haven't noticed, Rivers makes his no-name receivers look very good. He is a HUGE part of that offense. I doubt that Alex could match that success, or even be half as good. We'll see, though.
