As flawed as Palmer is, he is younger and more mobile than McNabb. Both put up very similar numbers this season...ranking in the low 20s in rating.

Where all this conversation is leading us is the recognition that the 49ers are in desperate straits for a QB to start the season now that Alex has made in clear he no longer wants to be here. AT THE VERY BEST, we will see a re-tread like McNabb or Palmer, or over-pay for someone like Kolb or Orton, AND WILL STILL BE AT LEAST A YEAR AWAY from a competent QB. Not until the new HC can develop a rookie will we see the kind of QB play that will take this team deep in the playoffs. We are worse off now than at any time since Garcia left.

We can bring Shawn Hill back!

This is what I'm saying. We're in much worse situation without Alex than with him. A rookie is not going to cut it and, unless the GM plus off some sort of unthought of trade, we're in real bad shape that the QB position. McNabb nor Palmer will change that fact...
mcnabb is a very good quarterback that cant handle the pressure of a big game and gets his receivers more grounders than a sinker ball pitcher

After reading some additional info this afternoon, it appears that Alex is not as fully committed to leaving as one article made it sound. His more complete statements were along the lines that there are "a lot of changes in this building" and he would wait to see who the new GM is and who the new HC is and then make a decision when he has all the facts.

So while that may be just a nice diplomatic statement, it wasn't like he was being forced to say it. As I have said in other places, I really don't see him coming back but, who knows? If the Lombardi/Harbaugh package did come about, that could change the landscape at 4949 Centennial as well as the public and player perception of the future.

I feel that McNabb or Palmer would atleast bring more stability and consistancy to the QB position while a rookie is being groomed...Whether its being able to make better calls at the line of scrimmage, make the short and intermediate passes with more consistancy, etc....Those little things...Sure our O-Line would still need to provide better protection but McNabb or Palmer could atleast get us to the point where we could win our division convincingly while the other pieces are still being put into the place...

Where are you getting this "feeling" from? You want a quarterback that could not keep his job on a bad Washington team, or a quarterback that lead the Bengals to a 4-12 record. The posters on this board have absolutely no football sense what so ever. I hope we pick up an over the hill quarterback and then we will see how much we will miss Alex Smith.

Your comment, while a tad on the caustic side, reveals the mess this team is now in at the QB position. The bottom line is, it is very unlikely that the starter next year will be as good as Alex has been since Johnson took over from Raye.

I don't see that considering Alex was the better QB of the three this year and is still growing as a 26 year old with barely three seasons starting in the NFL (he's started 50 games).

McNabb and Palmer are both on the wrong side of 30 and played poorly this season for the most part. It's not impossible they could turn it around here but I just can't see it.

I'd rather make a trade like Houston did for Schaub, or KC did with Cassel, or Seattle did for Whitehurst than going after a high priced old guy that is just coming off the worst season of their career. Rather I'd look a young, promising player that is backing up a proven starter on their team so they are able to be traded for.

This is true. It's unfortunate, but true.

And Alex did a great job this year with us...He has showed so much improvement since he has came into the leauge...Maybe in another 6 years, he will be a top notch QB...Maybe he will make to a probowl...Hell, maybe he will get a team to the playoffs..HELL!...Maybe he will even get a team to a winning record!...I wonder if McNabb or Palmer has achieved any of those things???...I wonder how much better Alex was than those two QBs this year...I am sure his stats were MUCH better than the two listed above...I am sure his career stats are much better too...And you wanna talk about McNabb losing his starting job...Who did Alex lose his starting job to this year???...And how many times did he lose his job?...Maybe I was wrong but wasnt pretty much EVERY (or atleat majority of the) analyst and other players on that team saying that McNabb should not have been benched?...Yep...I agree with you on a couple of things...Some of the posters dont know s**t about football...And yes....Give me a QB who has done something besides underachieve...
i live in VA so i see all the redskins games. mcnabb is still a good QB. the skins o-line sucks and they dont have very good WRs. our o-line is better and we have much better WRs. they will release him because they don't want to pay 75 mill to a back up. i think he could revive his career with the niners just like kurt warner did with the cards. i also dont think we will get luck in the draft so we should try to go after him.

crabtree, morgan, davis and gore are much better than moss, armstrong, colley and torain. and our o-line played much better the second half of the season. there oline needs to be rebuilt, at least ours is already being rebuilt.
