As flawed as Palmer is, he is younger and more mobile than McNabb. Both put up very similar numbers this season...ranking in the low 20s in rating.
Where all this conversation is leading us is the recognition that the 49ers are in desperate straits for a QB to start the season now that Alex has made in clear he no longer wants to be here. AT THE VERY BEST, we will see a re-tread like McNabb or Palmer, or over-pay for someone like Kolb or Orton, AND WILL STILL BE AT LEAST A YEAR AWAY from a competent QB. Not until the new HC can develop a rookie will we see the kind of QB play that will take this team deep in the playoffs. We are worse off now than at any time since Garcia left.

His more complete statements were along the lines that there are "a lot of changes in this building" and he would wait to see who the new GM is and who the new HC is and then make a decision when he has all the facts.Originally posted by dj43:

This is what I'm saying. We're in much worse situation without Alex than with him. A rookie is not going to cut it and, unless the GM plus off some sort of unthought of trade, we're in real bad shape that the QB position. McNabb nor Palmer will change that fact...

I feel that McNabb or Palmer would atleast bring more stability and consistancy to the QB position while a rookie is being groomed...Whether its being able to make better calls at the line of scrimmage, make the short and intermediate passes with more consistancy, etc....Those little things...Sure our O-Line would still need to provide better protection but McNabb or Palmer could atleast get us to the point where we could win our division convincingly while the other pieces are still being put into the place...
. The posters on this board have absolutely no football sense what so ever. I hope we pick up an over the hill quarterback and then we will see how much we will miss Alex Smith.

Where are you getting this "feeling" from? You want a quarterback that could not keep his job on a bad Washington team, or a quarterback that lead the Bengals to a 4-12 record. The posters on this board have absolutely no football sense what so ever. I hope we pick up an over the hill quarterback and then we will see how much we will miss Alex Smith.
