4-3 LB. Why do we need him?

Oh, and as for Thomas, why? Where would he play? LaBoy already filled that hole for 1/4 of the price and Thomas is FAR from the player we remember from Baltimore.

Why Thomas? Because Haralson, Brooks, Lawson & Laboy is the top of our OLB depth chart . . . which is average at best IMO. Also, Thomas can play outside or inside so he could slide into Wilhelm's roster spot and provide depth and experience across the board.

Yes he is far from the player we remember with the Ravens but that doesn't mean he couldn't upgrade our roster.

You're statement is totally inaccurate. Thomas hasn't ever started at the Will or Sam positions in the NFL. In Baltimore, he lined up at various positions, but only to mask his intention to rush the passer. He never had to actually execute positional assignments. In college, he played defensive end in the 4-3.

Placing a 32 year old, 270lb linebacker like Thomas inside would be completely counter to what the 49ers currently do.

Finally, let's look at the players mentioned above and what they've accomplished over the past three seasons.

Adalius Thomas - 32 Years Old

Parys Haralson - 26 Years Old

Manny Lawson - 25 Years Old

Ahmad Brooks - 26 Years Old

Travis Laboy - 28 Years Old

Aside from Travis Laboy (who was signed prior to the Patriots' release of Thomas and is behind Brooks on the depth chart), I really don't see how Thomas would benefit this group. His age and exaggerated drop off in production leads me to believe that his broken arm from 2008 is still bothering him. I won't even address his attitude issues.

Wow . . . you should so blog that dude. Yes he's played many spots within a 3-4 scheme including inside, outside and DE . . . as a pass rusher.

The only thing I can think of is some speed to our defense/secondary. Other than that I dont think its worth to spend any more money besides for depth.

Keep wishing because it isn't going to happen. Don't want and don't need him.

Don't need him?? Let's take a look at who we have at WR.

~~We have Crabtree, who has shown some signs of being a playmaker, but remember this will only be his sophomore season. He's still young and needs to mature as a professional.

~~We have Josh Morgan, who is in my opinion, overrated on the webzone. He makes plays at times, but looks like a career number 2 or 3 receiver.

~~We have Jason Hill, who has produced when given the opportunity, but seems like he's never on the field.

~~We have Brandon Jones, the best punt returner in the history of the NFL... ().

~~And a bunch of young rookies.

What would T.O. realistically bring to the table?? A veteran number one receiver that can still make plays and be a threat on offense. Sure he has an attitude problem that we all know of, but he's getting older and I'm sure he's more mature now than before. I would think he would want to be on a team that is capable of making the playoffs, and ultimately a superbowl. And what better story line to end T.O.'s career than to return to the team that drafted him and actually help them succeed. I'm sure if he cleaned up his attitude problem, the media and the rest of the league may view him on a more positive note.

Come home T.O.!

Informative post. I have been watching Thomas play for the past few years here in Boston and I agree, he is well past his prime. He's slow and lazy and has been butting heads with Bellicheck these past few years. It could be that he just needs a change of scenery but I highly doubt it. If LaBoy wasn't on the team I think we'd give him a look for nothing more than his experience.

On a side not, how were you able to quote those stats like that? It looks like it's straight from nfl.com

We already have TKO, we don't need another aging veteran presence. And im sure it wont be cheap to sign bulluck.

I say we trade a late pick in next years draft to the Cowboys for Patrick Crayton before doing this. He wants out of Dallas, and would add depth/veteran presence to the WR corp. I actually beleive he could possibly beat out Josh Morgan for the #2 spot, and that he was mainly overshadowed in Dallas by TO, Austin, and Roy Williams. My wifes a huge Cowboys fan and I've seen him play alot over the past few years and he's not too bad.

I would really look into the possibility of picking up any cb no matter the age. As long as he is servicable. We need depth bad.
Well first off before adding any players to our team, we should try to retain the talent that we already have. We have three key players hitting Free Agency next year unless we re-sign them.

Arguably our most explosive weapon on offense, due to his size and match up issues he creates for other teams, Vernon Davis will be hitting the market. He may not even want to re-sign with the Niners since he knows that he will get a fine pay day in free agency. It is of the upmost importance that we re-sign him since he adds so much matchup problems for our opposition and is a reliable, big target for Alex.

Dashon Goldson is yet another one of our players who is supposed to hit the market next year. He is truly an up incoming safety in the league, and I believe he will break out next year, and will garner a fat paycheck come next spring.

Lastly, Alex Smith's contract ends in 2011. If he plays up to my expectations, which are that he will enjoy much success this year due to a strong supporting cast, then he too will want a big pay day come next spring.

If these three players play up to their expectations then I see no way we keep all of them if we don't sort out their contracts before free agency. On top of this Aubrayo Franklin will play under the franchise tag this year, and will either want a huge pay day next year or will enter free agency. Hopefully we deal with some of these players now, so they won't be a headache down the road.
