The guy's 39 years old but if he can still play I'd move him to center and move Heitman to LG. But it's definitely only a stop-gap and not really a long term solution by any means.

We have a good Center, not great, but he knows the system and the snap counts and line audibles and is familiar with the players. But he does get run over when matched against good DT/NT's, bringing in a one season center from the outside would cause some probs imo

Im sure Heitmann will be our starter this year, the question is...He is in the final year of his contract, do the Niners extend him or resign him after the season?

I'd like the Idea of making Baas the primary backup at Center, get him plenty of PT in TC and preseason, he also becomes primary backup guard
and if he does well, maybe he takes over as Starter in 2011. would be nice to have a Center with his size and strength

This would also allow the Niners to release Wragge and/or Wallace, and use those roster spots for a couple guys with more upside

Any thots on Mawae? Incidentally, i'd love to see our 4th rd pick at C get a shot, just to see what he has, or not. Why draft him if he never gets in a game? Play him a lot in preseason, and if good enough, play him in reg. season. Otherwise, he is just taking up space, and what in the heck did we draft him for? Mawae for 1-2 yrs is intriguing, altho he definitely can't have more than a season in the tank. The will to prove the Titans wrong just might coax one more pro bowl season out of him.

you don't pick up centers intending to only use them for a year. it's not a simple plug n play position. he needs a good rapport with the other linemen, and with the QB
