Darren Sproles

What is the deal with Darren Sproles? Is he available? I looked up his career statistics and I never realized how little the San Diego Chargers actually use him!

Sproles is a return specialist and a change of pace back.

He might be available. He was franchised last year so if the Chargers want to keep him they have to give him a minimum 10% pay raise putting him just north of $7 million.

That's a lot of cash for a guy who's not an every down back. I bet he'll be hitting FA, especially with the rumors of the Chargers trying to acquire a RB through a trade.
From what I've heard, the Chargers dont want to franchise Sproles another year. They dont believe he's an every down back also, so if they dont get an extension for him, he'll be a FA.

Yeah... I haven't heard anything either way.

that's one of the reasons why the Chargers want to trade Cromartie for a starting RB, because they do not think Sproles is worth 7 mil a year and an every down back.
Chargers to Let Sproles Test FA

Quote:
INDIANAPOLIS — Four days after releasing LaDainian Tomlinson, the San Diego Chargers could be in the market for two running backs after notifying Darren Sproles on Friday that they will allow him to become an unrestricted free agent.

Sproles’ agent, Gary Wichard, said the Chargers will not tender the running back, which they could have in order to receive compensation should he sign elsewhere. Sproles has been a solid backup, an occasional starter and a dangerous return man. He should draw interest in a limited free-agent market.

This decision not to tender Sproles was mainly done for economic reasons. If the Chargers had done so, they would have had to pay him $7.3 million next season. Should Sproles get an offer now, the Chargers could try to counter but he doesn’t have to extend that courtesy if he wants to sign elsewhere.

Although Tomlinson and Sproles formed a solid tandem for years, the Chargers were 31st in rushing last season.

San Diego, which won the AFC West, clearly will be in the market for running backs in the draft and maybe in free agency or via a trade.

He and Bush, if they let him walk, would be serious options for us at 2nd RB/return specialist while being able to use the two picks on something else other than CJ Spiller in FA.

...only if the price is right!

Thank you, Bob Barker!
Why Sproles Would Be a Good Fit for the 49ers...

Quote:
Over the past few weeks, I've written numerous times how it doesn't make much sense for the 49ers to try to acquire certain high-profile players, such as Julius Peppers, Donovan McNabb, Brandon Marshall, Karlos Dansby and others this offseason.

But the 49ers need the service that Sproles provides, and he would likely fit in their budget. I would not be surprised if the club makes a legitimate bid to obtain his services.

I want that little b*****d so I can return kicks for Td's on madden! and It feels so good to see a 49er take a kick back for a td!! ugh!! we need it.

It sucks having Brandon Jones as your only option in the return game in madden.
He's gotten 1,000 yards in kick returns the last 3 seasons.
this needs to happen.
I can't post it here because its a paid subspription service, but ESPN Insider thinks San Francisco is a logical destination for Darren Sproles. And now apparently Matt Maiocco agrees! Come on 49ers, MAKE IT HAPPEN... Don't let us down!

Darren, we'll have a #43 jersey waiting for you.
