This one is just a coincidence as both teams happen to need another pass rusher.
He can provide good depth. We could do a lot worse. As long as we draft someone else to compete I am fine with this pickup.

6.5 sacks in a year, 23.5 for his career. His last year he had 4 sacks in 4 games before getting injured. Worth a spot for TC

I'd like to have him on the Niners

Good motor, could be productive backup who can pass rush and play the run well
and I would feel ok about him starting if guys get dinged up

If Brooks becomes the starter at Will, I think Laboy would back him up
and Haralson would come in for Lawson on 3rd downs,
Haralson seems to play better as a strongside pass rusher anyway
book it
lets grab Sharper also

Even when healthy, I don't think LaBoy is a "better" option than these guys, but he would be a very good addition as a 3rd down pass rush specialist. That's really his game, getting off the ball very quickly and providing a speed rush off the edge...so think of him more as a complimentary piece more so than a full-time solution.

Thanks. With that now explained, seems like we'd overspend and he'd fizzle out. I'd rather grab a flier in the late rounds of the draft.

That's one way to look at it. Another way is to say, LaBoy being a veteran and having experience in a 3-4 system would be able to come in right away and contribute (and likely won't be overly expensive considering he's coming off an injury) without much ramp-up time.

That would allow us to continue to develop Briggs (if they think he's got potential), and use a pick in this draft that was slotted for a DE/OLB, to address another position.

So from a personnel standpoint, adding LaBoy does make sense.

Yeah, I don't want to knock LaBoy, but I just don't see the point. He's got a few teams interested, meaning he can push his price up. We've got starters and backups at both spots, if, as you mentioned, Briggs becomes anything. Plus, we can use a pick on a rusher -- i.e. Brandon Graham's name has been thrown around.

Banta-Cain got just over $4 mill from us. LaBoy may not command that much, but I just think we have other pressing needs. Either make a splash at the position or pass.

If they decide to go with a 1 year solution, LaBoy is not bad. If they want a more long-term solution, I agree with you that a guy like Graham is the way to go.
imo, it's all about how much he cost us.

Banta was about $ 27,000 per spin, over his career with us

I'd love it if he joined the Niners. I went to high school with him. I was in his brothers class and he was a year below.

He's a good guy, though I liked him better than his brother who's now his agent. Naturally I've watched him during his time in the NFL and he's been solid. I doubt he'll be a Pro-Bowler, but he's got skills. He looks better on the field than his stats, which aren't terrible, show.

sign him so we can grab more O-linemen in the draft....
A lot will depend on if Laboy has completely healed from the injury.

We do not need a LaBoy, we need a LaMan.
