49ers Cap Space in 2010?

Originally posted by Butter:
I know its a little early because they haven't started cutting, restructuring deals yet, but what is the preliminary estimates for the Niners cap space this off-season? How will that compare to the rest of the league?

Should this be in FA or Niners Talk board?

Right now i have the niners pegged at 52.9M under, if the CBA is agreed to, if no CBA then their is no cap.

10-15 M will go towards rookies though.

Go figure that the season we finally have big time cap room there's no salary cap
I am troubled by what AB tells us. (1) We have $53M+ in available cap money to spend, and (2) the Yorks knew that 2010 was likely to be an uncapped year. This tells me that the Yorks never intended to field a top flight team.

During the capped years, they should have committed much of that money to good players and got them tied up for a number of years. In 2010, many of these will not be UFA, but rather RFA. The good ones available in 2010 will be offered more money because the cap is not a factor.

Am I right AB?

We have been trying to, but we've only had good players up to this point.

we will definitely have enough to resign Willis and Davis!!
the cap will be reached, thats what makes this sport the best.

Sign Bush, Pennington, vetern OG, and resign Bly, Franklin, Wilhelm, and Brooks.
Then we should have the cash to sign Logan Mankins

Only if the Patriots don't put the franchise tag on him.

And if a new CBA gets negotiated.

They have spent a TON of money in free agency over the last couple of years. Personally, Im glad they arent just out there throwing a ton of cash at average free agents.

Granted, we dont know how it would work out if they did throw more money towards FA, and a new CBA got worked out. AB, how would that have worked out if the Niners spent all their cap money and then a new CBA was agreed upon?

no it doesn't. nobody thiought it would get this far. it is an uncapped year but none of the players can be UFA, which is going to significanty lower their value.

would you have rather the niners be like the raiders and carry on like there would be no cap and then be f**ked when one comes up and we ahve to cut everyone?

No but what the Niners are doing now isn't the solution either. While I ain't freaking out crying over an 8-8 season, I am hugely disappointed because we didn't go after talent (both players and coaching) who could've come in and surely help us get into the postseason. I'd like to see something in between the above and what we are doing where we show some aggressiveness in identifying talent that can help and a willingness to go out and spend money to get them whether the talent is a player or a coach.
