Game Day: San Francisco 49ers at Pittsburgh Steelers

Sep 19, 2015 at 9:00 PM--

Game Day article released early due to Sunday's early kickoff.

On Sunday, the Pittsburgh Steelers (0-1) will host the San Francisco 49ers (1-0) at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The 49ers are coming off of a 20-3 win against the Minnesota Vikings. The Steelers are coming off of a 28-21 loss against the New England Patriots.

Sunday's matchup between the 49ers and Steelers will feature two franchises that have combined for 11 Super Bowl championships.

49ers RB Carlos Hyde is coming off a game where he rushed for 168 yards, two touchdowns, and had 182 all-purpose yards against the Vikings. His 11 rushing first downs also led the NFL last week and were the most by a 49ers running back in franchise history during a season opener. Hyde's NFL-leading performance earned him the FedEx Ground Player of the Week award. Hyde turns 24 on Sunday.

It will be a homecoming for 49ers head coach Jim Tomsula, who grew up just outside Pittsburgh. He will have 50 friends and family in attendance to watch his 49ers take on the home team. In fact, Tomsula's uncle 'Tic' was a scoreboard operator at Heinz Field for 12 seasons and his grandfather opened a restaurant in the shadow of Forbes Field, the one-time home of the Steelers and Pirates.

A win in Pittsburgh would make the 49ers 2-0 before they head into their first divisional matchup with the Arizona Cardinals during week 3. WR Torrey Smith is motivated to play Pittsburgh. The former Baltimore Raven, a rival of Pittsburgh dating back to when the team was the Cleveland Browns, said that he will give it his all against the 'hated' Steelers in honor of a young girl named Sienna, who passed away this week.

"I'll pray everyday for healing for the family and I'll give it my all this weekend against the team Sienna hated the most," said Smith on Instagram.

With RB Reggie Bush out for the 49ers, the team will activate Mike Davis for the first time this season. However, according to offensive coordinator Geep Chryst, Jarryd Hayne will serve as Carlos Hyde's backup. WR Bruce Ellington's status is unknown due to an ankle sprain, but he did practice with the team on Friday.

Update: WR Bruce Ellington is inactive for the game. DeAndrew White will take his place. Other inactives include RB Bush, C Nick Easton, G Brandon Thomas, NG Mike Purcell, CB Shareece Wright, and OLB Corey Lemonier.

Creating the ideal 2022 San Francisco 49ers schedule

By Wayne Breezie
May 9

As I searched the world wide web for exciting things to bring to the world, I couldn't help but draw inspiration from the great Matt Barrows of The Athletic. In a recent mailbag article, a fan presented the task of creating the ideal San Francisco 49ers schedule based on what we already know for home/away opponents. Here is my dream schedule for the 2022 49ers season. Week 1 vs. Cardinals - This would be a home game for the 49ers and must-see television. Trey Lance would get a second chance at the team that handed him his first loss. Kyler Murray vs. Lance is pay-per-view quality. Week 2 at Panthers - Now that Lance got his feet wet, he should have no problems commanding his troops against the Carolina Panthers. I

Complete 2022 San Francisco 49ers Schedule Revealed

By David Bonilla
May 12

The NFL revealed its complete 272-game 2022 regular-season schedule on Thursday at 5:00 p.m. PT. NFL Kickoff Weekend will begin on Thursday, September 8, culminating with Super Bowl LVII on February 12, 2023, at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. The San Francisco 49ers open their season on the road against the Chicago Bears. Their first home game comes during Week 2 against the Seattle Seahawks. The Niners' bye is during Week 9. They are currently scheduled to participate in five prime-time matchups this year. San Francisco's opponents combined for a 154-135 record last season. The .533 winning percentage by opponents makes the 49ers' schedule tied with the Kansas City Chiefs for the fifth toughest in the NFL, based on last year's results, and

Breaking down the 49ers' Day 2 picks in the 2022 NFL Draft

By Rohan Chakravarthi
May 4

After a countless number of drafts where the 49ers built their roster via the first round, San Francisco dove into uncharted waters last weekend, as they had their first selection at No. 61 overall, since they traded up for their franchise quarterback in Trey Lance last offseason, sending their last year's first-rounder, this year's first-rounder, and next year's first-rounder as a part of the package. However, that doesn't mean the 49ers weren't productive in the draft, as they selected nine players in an extremely deep draft class, where some players that were expected to go in the middle rounds fell out of the draft altogether. Here's an breakdown of the 49ers Day 2 draft

49ers rookie Kalia Davis not molding his game after D.J. Jones

By Rohan Chakravarthi

The San Francisco 49ers begin their rookie minicamp on Friday afternoon, giving fans and media their first look at the nine rookies the team drafted, as well as the undrafted free agents the team signed or invited to camp. One player that likely will not participate in team drills is sixth-round defensive tackle Kalia Davis, who is recovering from a torn ACL he suffered last fall, which likely played a role in his falling draft stock. Davis has had an intriguing journey, playing linebacker during his freshman season before transitioning to the defensive line, which he attributed to his bigger size. "Well really, I moved from linebacker to D-lineman because my body was changing," Davis said. "I [gained] a little too much weight. The biggest part about
