Salary cap analyst Brad Spielberger of Pro Football Focus went through the exercise of picking each NFL team's top cut candidate this offseason. For the San Francisco 49ers, he named an offensive lineman who spent all of last season on the reserve/physically-unable-to-perform list — center Weston Richburg. With over $13 million in projected salary-cap space, a post-June 1 cut of Richburg would save the team nearly $8 million while creating about $3.5 million in dead money. Spielberger did consider listing quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, but general manager John Lynch's comments on Wednesday during the Eye Test for Two

San Francisco 49ers VP of player personnel Adam Peters recently spoke with Matt Barrows of The Athletic. He was asked about the team's presence in South Carolina to watch Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence. The Niners own the No. 12 overall pick in the upcoming draft, and Lawrence is expected to be the top selection, going to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Yet, San Francisco was among 17 teams in attendance to watch Lawrence. Peters reminds everyone that there were other players there. For example, one of the receivers that Lawrence was throwing to during the workout was Cornell Powell, who caught 53 passes for 882 yards and seven touchdowns for the Tigers last season. The

NFL Media analyst Daniel Jeremiah had the San Francisco 49ers selecting former Florida tight end Kyle Pitts in his first mock draft, released last month. In his latest mock draft for NFL.com, the draft analyst has John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan bolstering their offensive line, adding former Northwestern offensive tackle Rashawn Slater. Offensive tackle Trent Williams is scheduled to become a free agent next month and will require a hefty annual salary to stay with San Francisco. He's worth it, though.

Florio predicts the 49ers will release Jimmy Garoppolo rather than trade or keep the QB

What will the San Francisco 49ers do with quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo? The simple answer is that the team will retain his services, should a perceived upgrade not present itself. If a perceived upgrade is acquired, then the team will likely try to shop the quarterback. "Most presume he'll be traded," wrote Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk on Tuesday. "But here's the question: If the 49ers don't want to keep Garoppolo at the balance of his current contract, who would trade for the thing?" The New England Patriots would likely welcome back Garoppolo with open arms — for the right price. They have the cap space to absorb his salary.
