Team gives Fleck a tryout

Rick Armstrong, of the Beacon News, reports free agent WR P.J. Fleck (49ers) had a tryout with the Chicago Bears Tuesday, June 20. "I had a half-hour meeting with (offensive coordinator) Ron Turner, and then I worked out for them," Fleck said Wednesday, June 21. "I still haven't heard anything. They said they'd let us know by the end of the week." Fleck does already have an offer to join the staff of San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Nolan.

Team showing big interest in Brooks; but is he too costly?

Matt Maiocco, of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Nolan and vice president of player personnel Scot McCloughan attended the workout of Virginia LB Ahmad Brooks Thursday, June 22. As previously noted, the 49ers are also scheduled to fly Brooks to Santa Clara July 28. He'll have a physical the next day. The 49ers will have the right to select anywhere from No. 1 to No. 11 in the supplemental draft. The 32 teams are divided into three groupings. The first 11 teams (teams with six or fewer victories) will have a lottery to determine which teams choose in which positions, 1 thru 11. If the 49ers use their first pick on Brooks, they would forfeit their first-round selection in the 2007 NFL draft. Some NFL insiders do not expect Brooks to last until the second round of the supplemental draft because he's just so darned talented. The expectation is that a good team with veteran leadership will take a chance on Brooks with its first-round pick. The 49ers probably will not go after Brooks because of the exorbitant price in addition to the baggage he would bring to the team. They probably don't want to sacrifice their first pick for next year (probably another top-10 pick) on a player of questionable character.

Turner discusses TE situation

San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Norv Turner answered a question regarding the team's situation at tight end by responding: "We are going to use multiple personnel groups and one of the groups we use is two tight ends with a single back in the game and two wide receivers is something we've been working on a lot lately. There is a place for Vernon Davis and Eric Johnson to be on the field at the same time."

Contract update: P. Haralson

ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports San Francisco 49ers rookie LB Parys Haralson, a fifth-round draft choice, signed a four-year, $1.786 million with the team. The deal included a $176,000 signing bonus and minimum salaries of $275,000 (2006), $360,000 (2007), $445,000 (2008) and $530,000 (2009).
