When the San Francisco 49ers traded for Jimmy Garoppolo in 2017, he was seen as the team's quarterback of the future. He was the player who would solidify the position — the most important in sports — for years to come. Three years after signing a long-term deal with the team, the Niners drafted Garoppolo's eventual replacement. San Francisco made Trey Lance of North Dakota State the No. 3 overall pick last week. Garoppolo remains in the 49ers' plans for the upcoming season. Head coach Kyle Shanahan has repeatedly stated that the veteran quarterback will be his starter for Week 1 while leaving the door cracked open for the rookie by saying anything is possible. For now, Garoppolo will be the man under center. However, behind him on the depth chart is

After not having played in a football game since participating in an exhibition on October 3, 2020, 49ers quarterback and first-round draft pick Trey Lance is understandably excited about finally getting his NFL career underway. Lance is currently at 49ers facilities in Santa Clara to take part in Friday and Saturday's rookie minicamp, which will mark his first time on the practice field since the 49ers made him their first-round pick on April 29. It'll also be a step forward for Lance after he missed most of his final season at North Dakota State due to the school canceling games because of COVID-19. Lance's lone game action came in an exhibition against Central Arkansas on October 3, and since then, he's been patiently waiting for his next chapter to

The San Francisco 49ers own what many expect to be a talented roster for the upcoming season. Of course, that depends on the depth chart not being impacted by the poor injury luck the team endured in 2020. "Assuming everyone stays healthy this year, the 49ers have one of the league's more complete rosters, with no obvious weakness on offense or defense," wrote Vincent Verhei of Football Outsiders in a feature for ESPN. No roster is perfect, though. If you look hard enough, you can always find a weakness. Where would you say that weakness lies with the 49ers? Perhaps the depth at cornerback? Maybe somewhere along the offensive line?

Jimmy Garoppolo figures to be the starting quarterback when the San Francisco 49ers take the field against the Detroit Lions in Week 1. At some point, though, whether it be this year or in the more distant future, Trey Lance will take the reins. After all, the Niners traded up to the No. 3 overall pick in this year's draft to acquire the former North Dakota State star quarterback. The 49ers are holding a three-day rookie minicamp this weekend. Lance is the only quarterback participating. Garoppolo will enter the mix on May 24, when the team begins organized team activities. While Kyle Shanahan acknowledges it would be a tall order for Lance to beat out Garoppolo for the starting job, the 49ers head coach welcomes competition at all positions. "[I]f
