San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Mike Evans is working through a rib injury he suffered Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals. There is no guarantee that he will be healthy enough to suit up for this weekend's contest against the Denver Broncos, but the 49ers are hopeful.
It sounds like Evans is dealing with a pain-tolerance issue and could play through the discomfort.
49ers general manager John Lynch joined Bay Area radio station KNBR on Thursday morning and discussed the chances of his veteran receiver suiting up Sunday afternoon.
"I will tell you this: Mike Evans, part of the whole package, when I talk to people like [Former NFL DB] Ronde Barber, my old friend who's stayed really close with the Bucs, once we got him (Evans), I think one of the things Ronde said first was, 'That's a tough SOB,'" Lynch said. "And I think we've already seen that with Mike. You know, he is old school in his mindset, and he doesn't want to miss.
"And so, we'll always do what's right for our player and all that stuff, but Mike's going to make every attempt to try to play, and we'll see where that goes. It's still Thursday, and a couple more days before we kick off. He's dealing with that, and we'll see if he can get there by Sunday."
San Francisco signed Evans in free agency in March after the receiver spent 12 seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He has appeared in all three games with the 49ers, recording 12 catches for 137 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Nick Bosa injury update
The 49ers opted not to place defensive end Nick Bosa on injured reserve. Bosa is dealing with a pulled calf muscle that occurred ahead of a practice last week. He missed Week 3 against the Cardinals and will almost certainly miss this weekend's game against the Broncos. But when might fans expect to see Bosa back on the field?
Lynch couldn't provide specifics on how long the star pass rusher will be sidelined.
"I think Nick's doing well," Lynch said. "He's working diligently. I mean, it was just like a week ago today when that happened. And so, he's working really hard, and he'll likely be out this week, and then we'll go from there. And we'll look forward to the time when we have Nick back.
"But when we bring him back, we've got to make sure he's right on all counts, and he'll work his tail off until he can get back out there."
When asked if Bosa could miss significant time, Lynch remained vague.
"I think he's working through it, and when he's right, we'll have him back out there," Lynch said. "I'm not trying to be vague. Calf injuries are sometimes murky."
Trent Williams expected to return to practice
Left tackle Trent Williams suffered a neck stinger on Sunday against the Cardinals and did not practice Wednesday. However, he could participate in Thursday's session, which would be a positive development.
"Yeah, we're hoping to get Trent back out today at practice, and we'll see where it goes from there," Lynch said. "But I know Trent is playing at such a high level, and didn't finish that game the other day, and I think looking forward to this week, and we'll see. Provided everything goes well, we're hopeful that we have him."
