Former Georgia defensive end Mykel Williams received the call of a lifetime on Thursday night. On the other end of the line were San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch, head coach Kyle Shanahan, and team owner Jed York.
The trio informed the standout pass rusher that he was headed to the 49ers as the 11th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, revealing they had even attempted to trade up to secure him.
You can listen in on the emotional call below:
Speaking later about the team's failed attempt to move up in the draft, Lynch said, "We tried, and thank God they took someone else because he was still there when we picked. So we're happy."
Shanahan added, "We thought about going up, and John definitely attempted for a sec, and I was like, 'Good attempt, man. I think we should go.' But they shot him down. So we were ready to watch him go away, and we were ready to go to our second and third [choice], but he didn't go where we thought he was going to go."
Fortunately for Lynch and Shanahan, things worked out. They got the player they coveted, didn't have to sacrifice other picks, and will continue shaping the roster as the draft resumes on Friday and Saturday.
