San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan did not provide any updates on the Brandon Aiyuk situation during his weekly interview on Bay Area radio station KNBR. When asked about it, the coach quipped, "So much has changed. No, I'm just joking. No new updates."
Shanahan apologized for the repetitive responses but explained that he simply had no new information to share.
"I wish I was saying something different, but nothing's changed yet," he admitted.
However, Shanahan did have more to say regarding the 49ers' other contract standoff. Tackle Trent Williams has been holding out since the start of training camp, seeking a restructured deal, likely one that includes some guaranteed money, as his current contract has none in its remaining years.
"You know, I've had some contact with him," Shanahan admitted. "It's been good to talk to him. I know we're negotiating hard. Nothing new to add, though, but hopefully, it's getting close."
The 49ers will open the regular season at Levi's Stadium against the New York Jets on Monday, September 9. Having Aiyuk and Williams available for the Week 1 matchup would be a significant boost for the offense and third-year quarterback Brock Purdy, so resolving these situations soon is essential.
