Amidst swirling trade rumors surrounding Brandon Aiyuk, the speculation surrounding Deebo Samuel's future with the San Francisco 49ers seems to have quieted down.
According to Michael Silver of the San Francisco Chronicle, the 49ers have assured Samuel that he will not be involved in any pre- or post-draft transactions, ensuring his place on the roster for the time being.
"Samuel, who signed a three-year, $71.55 million extension before the 2022 season, has been assured by his bosses that he will not be dealt during or after the draft," Silver reported, citing a source familiar with the discussions.
Earlier in the offseason, questions had arisen about Samuel's status, particularly with the 49ers exploring a contract extension for Aiyuk. This led to speculation about the feasibility of committing top-tier salaries to two wide receivers, especially with quarterback Brock Purdy poised to become the highest-paid player on the team next year.
As it stands, the 49ers can afford both Samuel and Aiyuk. The situation may become more challenging next year as the team's salary cap becomes tighter. Aiyuk's current salary cap hit stands at $14.124 million due to the team exercising his fifth-year option. However, a long-term contract could reduce this figure, deferring the impact on the salary cap to future years.
Silver's report indicates that Aiyuk is seeking an annual average well above $25 million, a figure that the 49ers have been reluctant to meet.
While Samuel's roster spot seems secure for the upcoming season, the 49ers have an out on his deal in 2025. The veteran receiver is slated to count $28.6 million against the salary cap in 2024 and $24.2 million in 2025.
