Amidst swirling trade rumors surrounding Brandon Aiyuk, the speculation surrounding Deebo Samuel's future with the San Francisco 49ers seems to have quieted down.

According to Michael Silver of the San Francisco Chronicle, the 49ers have assured Samuel that he will not be involved in any pre- or post-draft transactions, ensuring his place on the roster for the time being.

"Samuel, who signed a three-year, $71.55 million extension before the 2022 season, has been assured by his bosses that he will not be dealt during or after the draft," Silver reported, citing a source familiar with the discussions.

Earlier in the offseason, questions had arisen about Samuel's status, particularly with the 49ers exploring a contract extension for Aiyuk. This led to speculation about the feasibility of committing top-tier salaries to two wide receivers, especially with quarterback Brock Purdy poised to become the highest-paid player on the team next year.

As it stands, the 49ers can afford both Samuel and Aiyuk. The situation may become more challenging next year as the team's salary cap becomes tighter. Aiyuk's current salary cap hit stands at $14.124 million due to the team exercising his fifth-year option. However, a long-term contract could reduce this figure, deferring the impact on the salary cap to future years.

Silver's report indicates that Aiyuk is seeking an annual average well above $25 million, a figure that the 49ers have been reluctant to meet.

While Samuel's roster spot seems secure for the upcoming season, the 49ers have an out on his deal in 2025. The veteran receiver is slated to count $28.6 million against the salary cap in 2024 and $24.2 million in 2025.

Does 49ers QB Brock Purdy need Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel for success?

By David Bonilla
May 15

Rumors circulated before and during the 2024 NFL Draft about the possibility of the San Francisco 49ers losing one of their top two wide receivers—Brandon Aiyuk or Deebo Samuel. Such a scenario could have significantly impacted the team's success in the upcoming season and posed a potential blow for quarterback Brock Purdy, who has thrived alongside the dynamic duo on the field. However, none of these speculations came to fruition. Both Aiyuk and Samuel remain on the roster, at least for another season, though their future beyond that remains uncertain. Aiyuk is seeking a contract extension that would position him among the highest-paid wide receivers in the NFL. At the same time, Samuel already commands a significant salary following a deal rework in 2022.

Not long ago, Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated suggested that the San Francisco 49ers might part ways with wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. Since then, much has changed. The 2024 NFL Draft has come and gone, with both Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel still on the roster despite rampant trade rumors before and during the draft. Last season, Aiyuk led the 49ers with 1,342 receiving yards, 322 more than the next leading target, tight end George Kittle. It was the second consecutive season that saw Aiyuk surpass the 1,000-receiving-yard mark. The two sides are now working on a contract extension to keep the talented young wideout in red and gold for the foreseeable future. "I see the San Francisco 49ers making a strong effort to get Brandon Aiyuk signed, and I wouldn't be
