Day 2 of the San Francisco 49ers training camp is officially over, as head coach Kyle Shanahan conducted a more intense, scrimmage-filled practice after a lighter Day 1 on Wednesday.

Both the offense and the defense had their moments on Day 2, although the quarterbacks struggled, which allowed the defense to dominate more.

Did Brock Purdy, Trey Lance, and Sam Darnold perform as badly as their stats indicated? Let's break down every single throw from each quarterback here.

11-on-11s: 1st Period

Brock Purdy (QB1)

  1. Brock Purdy throws an incompletion to Ross Dwelley in the flat. The ball was led too far for the tight end.

Trey Lance (QB2)

  1. Trey Lance throws an incompletion intended for Jauan Jennings. This was Lance's worst throw of the day, as he tried to fit a ball over the middle into double coverage, with a linebacker, believed to be Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles, tipping the pass for a near interception. Samuel Womack was draped over Jennings on the play with great coverage. Poor decision by Lance.

Brock Purdy (QB1)

  1. Brock Purdy throws a pick-six to Tashaun Gipson on the first play of the drive. Purdy faced pressure from Clelin Ferrell coming untouched from the left side, but a puller was able to block him, and Purdy fired to the backside sideline on a pass intended for Brandon Aiyuk. However, Tashaun Gipson was right there for the interception, and had he not been there, Deommodore Lenir would've likely intercepted the pass, as he had position on Aiyuk.

Sam Darnold (QB2)

  1. Sam Darnold hits Deebo Samuel for a 10-12 yard out-route. Ball could've been a little more in front, but enough room for Samuel to make the catch and stay in bounds. Samuel Womack was in coverage.

7-on-7s: 1st Period

Brock Purdy (QB1)

  1. Brock Purdy hits Kyle Juzczyk in the flat.
  2. Brock Purdy hits Tay Martin on an out-route. Needed to throw this ball much earlier or get rid of it. Likely a sack if it's 11-on-11s.
  3. Brock Purdy hits Kyle Juszczyk on a quick out-route. Tashaun Gipson was coming in on a safety blitz.
  4. Brock Purdy throws a checkdown to Charlie Woerner, but the pass is dropped.

Sam Darnold (QB2)

  1. Sam Darnold hits Deebo Samuel over the middle for a catch.
  2. Sam Darnold finds Tyrion Davis-Price in the flat for a catch.
  3. Sam Darnold fires a pass between the 2nd and 3rd windows to Danny Gray, who makes a strong catch between defenders in a tight window. Tough throw, given the window, but Darnold got it there in time.
  4. Sam Darnold finds Chris Conley on a seven-yard out-route. Good timing on this throw, compared to his last out-route pass.

Brock Purdy (QB1)

  1. Brock Purdy hits George Kittle on a quick out-route.
  2. Brock Purdy hits Brandon Aiyuk on a good high pass 20-25 yards downfield. Put the ball where Aiyuk could go get it, and the receiver made a nice play with Charvarius Ward close in coverage.
  3. Brock Purdy looks deep on an incompletion to Jauan Jennings that traveled 45-50 yards in the air. The ball was overthrown, and it was a tight window to fit the deep shot into. Would've preferred the read to Ronnie Bell on a crosser, as the safety went to help the downfield shot.

Trey Lance (QB2)

  1. Trey Lance throws an incompletion to Brayden Willis in the flat. Missed high and led him a bit too much, leading to the incompletion, as Willis could only get one hand on the ball.
  2. Trey Lance throws a quick checkdown to Cameron Latu in the flat.
  3. Trey Lance throws a quick out-route to Brayden Willis for a catch. The ball was a little low, but Willis was able to make the play and turn upfield with a defender on his tail.

11-on-11s: 2nd Period

Brock Purdy (QB1)

  1. Brock Purdy is sacked, as Drake Jackson seemed to beat Trent Williams, forcing Purdy up in the pocket, leading to a cleanup sack from the interior, which appeared to be Javon Hargrave.
  2. Brock Purdy throws an incompletion to George Kittle, missing wide on the play. Austin Bryant had a good rep against Trent Williams as a pass-rusher.

Trey Lance (QB2)

  1. Trey Lance throws an incompletion to Tyrion Davis-Price on a dropped pass. This one was close, as Marcelino McCrary-Ball was charging in and may have made a play on the ball, but it appeared as a drop as Davis-Price couldn't corral the pass when looking to turn upfield. If it was a catch, would've been a gain of zero, as the linebacker was right there.
  2. Trey Lance hits Jordan Mason up the sideline for an 8-yard gain, with more coming after the catch. This was Lance's best throw of the day.

Brock Purdy (QB1)

  1. Brock Purdy fires a completion between the windows to Brandon Aiyuk over the middle on a good throw and catch, as defenders were in the area.
  2. Brock Purdy has a great throw to Brandon Aiyuk for 25 yards, but the pass is dropped. Purdy managed to get the ball over the outstretched hands of Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles on the layered pass, but Aiyuk couldn't hold on.

Sam Darnold (QB2)

  1. Sam Darnold throws an incompletion to Tay Martin on a dropped pass when running an out-route.
  2. Sam Darnold throws an incompletion to Danny Gray on a pass too wide. There was good coverage on the in-breaking route that stuffed Gray from having a chance, but the ball was too wide inside.

Brock Purdy (QB1)

  1. Brock Purdy throws a completion to Brandon Aiyuk on a short crosser. He's immediately met by Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw for a short gain.
  2. Brock Purdy is sacked, as Drake Jackson had another nice rep against Trent Williams, allowing for cleanup on the inside by the defensive tackles.

Sam Darnold (QB2)

  1. Sam Darnold throws a deep completion to Brandon Aiyuk for 35 yards. This was his best throw of the day, as Aiyuk snuck behind the defense.
  2. Sam Darnold throws an incompletion to Danny Gray. Telegraphed this deep comeback pass all the way, looking to make a back-to-back splash, and Samuel Womack had a good break on the play, forcing the incompletion.

Brock Purdy (QB1)

  1. Brock Purdy is sacked by Kerry Hyder working on the edge. He was looking for receivers Chris Conley and Tay Martin coming out of their breaks, but both slipped, killing the play.
  2. Brock Purdy throws a deep incompletion to Deebo Samuel, who had a step on Charvarius Ward. It was a solid read, as the receiver had a step in 1-on-1 coverage, but Purdy overthrew the ball, ending his day with an incompletion.

Trey Lance (QB2)

  1. Trey Lance throws a quick out-route to Danny Gray on a three-step drop.
  2. Trey Lance throws an incompletion to Willie Snead, with Ambry Thomas breaking up the pass. Lance was nearly sacked, then rolled out and tried to fit a tough throw to Snead, but there was good coverage.

Overall Grade

None of the quarterbacks had inspiring performances on the day, with Purdy finishing 2/7 with three sacks, an interception, and drop, Lance finishing 2/5 with a drop, and Darnold finishing 2/5 with a drop.

Still, I'd give the slight edge to Sam Darnold for the reason of not making a poor play, like Lance and Purdy's shots into double-coverage, earning the free agent signing a "C" grade for the day.

Purdy and Lance both tie at a "C-" grade on a poor performance day, with both players battling their own struggles and inconsistencies.

Stay tuned for the next practice, Sunday, and the quarterback report that will ensue!

49ers Notebook: Nine years later, 49ers get Thanksgiving revenge over Seahawks; Shanahan, Purdy discuss key throws vs. Seahawks; What happened to Christian McCaffrey's helmet?

By Kirk Larrabee
Nov 24

It took nine years, but the San Francisco 49ers finally got some payback on Thursday night for the Seattle Seahawks feasting on turkey after a win at Levi's Stadium in 2014. The Seahawks' 19-3 win over the 49ers on Thanksgiving in 2014 was the last time either team played on Thanksgiving before Thursday night, and after that game then-Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson and cornerback Richard Sherman dug into the postgame turkey at the 50-yard line of Levi's Stadium at a time when the rivalry between the two teams was at a peak. The 49ers flipped the script on Thursday, notching a 31-13 win over the Seahawks at Lumen Field in Seattle that was followed by a slew of 49ers getting their fill of Thanksgiving turkey, courtesy of NBC. 49ers bring in familiar face for workout amidst roster injuries

By David Bonilla
Nov 27

The San Francisco 49ers are turning to a familiar face for a workout following injuries to two safeties, Talanoa Hufanga and George Odum. Hufanga suffered a torn ACL in Week 11, while Odum sustained a torn biceps on Thanksgiving. According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, veteran defensive back Anthony Averett will work out for the 49ers on Monday. Averett briefly joined San Francisco's roster during training camp in August but was released with an injury settlement on August 17. Veteran DB Anthony Averett is working out today for the

"It was a lot of boo hoos last year": Haason Reddick shares thoughts on 49ers-Eagles rematch

By David Bonilla
Nov 27

Whenever the San Francisco 49ers reflect on their NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles, they believe they didn't have a fair shot. Despite confidence in their game plan for last season's matchup, the game took an unexpected turn when quarterback Brock Purdy suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his throwing arm early on. After the NFC title game loss, the 49ers expressed their confidence in the locker room, firmly believing that, at worst, the game would have been a much closer contest than the 31-7 defeat.
