49ers’ Arik Armstead reveals he suffered a hairline ankle fracture, but expects to return soon

Nov 7, 2022 at 6:44 PM--

Arik Armstead has not played since Week 4 against the Los Angeles Rams. The San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman expects to be back soon, though. While head coach Kyle Shanahan avoided revealing too many details about Armstead's injury, a new detail has surfaced.

Armstead told NBC Sports Bay Area's Jennifer Lee Chan that he has also been recovering from a hairline fracture in his left ankle.

"I was hoping to be on the earlier side of returning, but I'm still on schedule," Armstead told NBC Sports Bay Area after Monday's light practice, in which the defensive lineman did not participate.

The 49ers are being understandably careful with Armstead's recovery, given the new information. They hope to have the defensive lineman available down the stretch as the team hopes to make a playoff push in the second half of the season.

"Arik's improving," general manager John Lynch said last week. "He had somewhat of a significant deal in that he's coming off an injury with your lower half, and that's hard when you're a guy who is as big as he is. You've got to make sure he's right."

Armstead is also recovering from plantar fasciitis, which, until now, had been reported as being in his right foot. However, Chan reports that the initial setback was in the same foot as the fracture.

Armstead has missed five games this season. In addition to the last four, he missed San Francisco's Week 3 contest against the Denver Broncos.

After a very productive season with the Philadelphia Eagles, defensive tackle Javon Hargrave earned a big payday with the San Francisco 49ers, signing a four-year deal worth up to $84 million. That is life-changing money for the 30-year-old. Hargrave joined KNBR on Friday to discuss the move from Philly to the Bay Area. "I was talking to them before I even signed, and one thing I even told him, even the players that had [contacted] me was just it ain't really too much convincing you all can do," Hargrave said. "You ain't really got to convince me. I guess they thought I was playing at the time, but it ain't really hard to convince when you go into a team that's built on winning, and one, they trying to come pay me big money." Jake Brendel had suitors in free agency. Several teams, including the San Francisco 49ers, were interested in the veteran center. Ultimately, much to the delight of fans, he returned to the Niners, his NFL home since 2020. Brendel played 1,252 snaps this past season, by far the most of his career. His 62.9 overall, 71.8 pass-blocking, and 61.9 run-blocking Pro Football Focus grades were each the second-highest of his career. Despite being in the league since 2016, Brendel played just 250 total snaps before this past season, so he lacks the wear and tear of most 30-year-old offensive linemen. The center still feels like his career is just getting started, and his play is on the rise. "Honestly, I
