The San Francisco 49ers are preparing for their Week 5 contest against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Neither Arik Armstead nor Javon Kinlaw practiced this week. Armstead played on Monday night against the Los Angeles Rams but could not finish the game. A foot injury forced him to miss the previous game in Denver.

"It's something that was bothering him," head coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday morning on KNBR. "He got a new thing on a different foot last game that just made it a little bit worse, and we've got to take it a little slower this week."

Kinlaw did not play against the Rams. He is dealing with a "flare-up" in his surgically repaired knee.

The 49ers have ruled out both players for this weekend's game against the Panthers. After Friday's practice, Shanahan didn't sound optimistic about Armstead and Kinlaw being available for the 49ers' Week 6 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons either.

Is injured reserve an option for Armstead?

"We possibly could decide that on Arik by tomorrow (Saturday)," Shanahan responded. "But we've still got a lot more to discuss in talking with him."

Jimmie Ward (hamstring) practiced. The safety is a candidate to be activated off the injured reserve list.

Cornerback Jason Verrett (knee) is a candidate to be activated off the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. However, he was noticeably absent from Friday's practice after participating on Wednesday and Thursday. Shanahan indicated that had more to do with the lighter Friday session, saying that Verrett might have gone had it been a full-speed practice.

"We wanted to give him a full workout on the side instead of just walking through the cards and stuff," Shanahan said.

Neither Ward nor Verrett is listed below because they are not currently on the active roster.

Below are the official injury reports for the 49ers and Panthers, provided by the 49ers Communications staff. Also included are Friday's practice participation reports.

49ers vs. Giants Injury Report: Brandon Aiyuk questionable; Saquon Barkley ruled out

By David Bonilla
Sep 20

The San Francisco 49ers are preparing for their Week 3 contest against the New York Giants on Thursday at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California. Brandon Aiyuk will likely be a game-time decision. On Wednesday morning, general manager John Lynch shared that the wide receiver is working hard this week to play on Thursday. Aiyuk suffered a shoulder injury on a catch during the 49ers' opening drive on Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams. "I think, with Brandon, with these Thursday night games, they're a quick turnaround," Lynch said during a radio interview. "So he clearly got something irritated in his chest/shoulder area. He's working really hard to try to get ready.

49ers' Kyle Shanahan: Javon Kinlaw's hard work showing up on the film

By David Bonilla
Sep 22

All offseason, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan expressed confidence in fourth-year defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw despite the team not exercising the player's fifth-year option. It was certainly more confidence than fans had in the former first-round draft pick. Kinlaw had missed 24 games over the past two seasons. He underwent reconstructive knee surgery in 2021. A setback last season forced Kinlaw to miss 11 games. Fans were ready to label the defensive lineman a "bust." Some already had. The defensive lineman just could not stay on the football field. Kinlaw is finally healthy, though, and making his presence known. The defensive tackle is on pace for his best Pro Football Focus grade after an unimpressive first three NFL seasons.

DT Javon Hargrave signing with 49ers paying off immediately for both sides

By Rohan Chakravarthi
Sep 23

The San Francisco 49ers have started off the season hot, improving to 3-0 fresh off a Thursday Night victory over the New York Giants this week in their home opener. It's been a two-sided effort for the 49ers, who have scored 30 points in each of the team's three games, while limiting opponents to 42 points overall. A big portion of their defensive success? The talent on their defensive line, and this season, it has been headlined by star defensive tackle Javon Hargrave, who leads the team with 10 quarterback hurries. Coming into the season, it was known that Hargrave was a premier pass-rushing talent for the 49ers, but he's been on a tear to start the season, arguably serving as the team's best player on that end, which is exactly what San Francisco

Deebo Samuel to miss another practice ahead of 49ers vs. Cardinals

By David Bonilla
Sep 27

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel continues to miss practices. He didn't participate in Monday's bonus session, and head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed that the offense's do-everything player won't participate in Wednesday's practice. The coach informed reporters that Samuel is working through rib and knee injuries. Following last Thursday night's game against the New York Giants, the 49ers feared Samuel may have sustained a serious rib injury. However, further examination revealed no break, and the receiver was just sore in the days after the game. The knee injury is a new update. "It was something we really didn't know until the next day, later in that day, just him being sore and stuff," Shanahan said of the knee injury. "He didn't
