49ers run defense overcomes struggles, absence of Arik Armstead and Javon Kinlaw to become elite

By Rohan Chakravarthi
Dec 2

When Arik Armstead went down with an injury in Week 4 against the Los Angeles Rams just one week after Javon Kinlaw sustained an injury in Week 3, San Francisco had immediate depth concerns alongside the interior of their defensive line, which had been the heart of their run defense over the past few seasons. To begin the 2021 season, the 49ers played Arik Armstead primarily at "big end" and allowed over 100 yards rushing in seven of their first eight games, beginning the year 3-5 and at risk of missing the playoffs. When Armstead was moved to a primarily interior defender, the 49ers allowed 100 yards rushing to an opponent just once, and that was only due to a 73-yard rushing touchdown from Travis Homer on a fake punt in Week 13. Javon Kinlaw last appeared in a game on September 25. According to head coach Kyle Shanahan, the defensive tackle could be nearing a return from the injured reserve list. The San Francisco 49ers have brought back six players from injured reserve this season. That leaves the team with the ability to do so again twice more. On Friday morning, Shanahan again shot down the speculation that quarterback Trey Lance could return to serve as Jimmy Garoppolo's backup if the 49ers made a deep playoff run. "He's still going through his rehab," Shanahan said on KNBR. "That would be too soon for him, so that's pretty out of the

The San Francisco 49ers are preparing for their Week 13 contest against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California. Christian McCaffrey didn't practice. The running back worked through some knee irritation on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints. Head coach Kyle Shanahan wasn't sure if the situation would keep McCaffrey from playing this weekend. "It's keeping him from [practicing] today, so I hope not," Shanahan told reporters. Defensive end Charles Omenihu is also dealing with a knee issue and did not practice. Another defensive lineman, Arik Armstead, was a limited participant. Armstead has not played since Week 4 and returned to the practice field last Friday. He did not play against the Saints,
