49ers-Rams: Arik Armstead and Javon Kinlaw return to practice

Oct 1, 2022 at 12:34 PM--

The San Francisco 49ers might be on the brink of receiving a defensive line boost. Arik Armstead and Javon Kinlaw returned to practice today, the last practice before the team faces the Los Angeles Rams at Levi's Stadium on Monday night.

We'll learn how much Armstead and Kinlaw participated in the Friday session when the team releases its official injury report this afternoon.

Armstead has been dealing with plantar fasciitis in his right foot, forcing him to miss the Week 3 contest against the Denver Broncos.

"But it is just kind of a nagging thing that it's fired up right now," general manager John Lynch said this week of Armstead's injury. "It's hard to avoid. But Arik is working. Our trainers are doing a nice job, trying to just quiet it down so that he can go play, and play effectively."

Kinlaw had not practiced this week as he deals with knee issues. The third-year defensive tackle underwent reconstructive surgery on his ACL last year. He played 42 defensive snaps and two special teams snaps against the Broncos.

Cam Inman of Bay Area News Group notes that Kinlaw appeared to be "noticeably hindered" during practice.

When Arik Armstead went down with an injury in Week 4 against the Los Angeles Rams just one week after Javon Kinlaw sustained an injury in Week 3, San Francisco had immediate depth concerns alongside the interior of their defensive line, which had been the heart of their run defense over the past few seasons. To begin the 2021 season, the 49ers played Arik Armstead primarily at "big end" and allowed over 100 yards rushing in seven of their first eight games, beginning the year 3-5 and at risk of missing the playoffs. When Armstead was moved to a primarily interior defender, the 49ers allowed 100 yards rushing to an opponent just once, and that was only due to a 73-yard rushing touchdown from Travis Homer on a fake punt in Week 13. The San Francisco 49ers are preparing for their Week 13 contest against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California. Christian McCaffrey didn't practice. The running back worked through some knee irritation on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints. Head coach Kyle Shanahan wasn't sure if the situation would keep McCaffrey from playing this weekend. "It's keeping him from [practicing] today, so I hope not," Shanahan told reporters. Defensive end Charles Omenihu is also dealing with a knee issue and did not practice. Another defensive lineman, Arik Armstead, was a limited participant. Armstead has not played since Week 4 and returned to the practice field last Friday. He did not play against the Saints,
