49ers-Bears: Kyle Shanahan unsure about George Kittleā€™s status, remains hopeful TE will play, other injury updates

Sep 9, 2022 at 7:20 AM--

George Kittle is dealing with a groin strain. It has put his Week 1 status into question. The San Francisco 49ers travel to Soldier Field to face the Chicago Bears on Sunday and could be without their star tight end.

On Thursday, Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network reported that Kittle is dealing with a Grade 2 strain that is limiting his speed and may require some rest to ensure he is available for the majority of the season.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan joined KNBR this morning and remains hopeful that Kittle will be available against the Bears. He was asked about the status of the tight end.

"I don't know yet," Shanahan told Brian Murphy and Kerry Crowley. "I'm really hoping it will be all right. I'm trying to think positively on it. He didn't end up getting to go yesterday ... but they'll hit him hard [today]. They'll do it all morning, and hopefully, he'll be able to get out there and do some red zone work today."

Shanahan also shared that he doesn't expect to have offensive lineman Daniel Brunskill available on Sunday. However, he did have some good news on right tackle Mike McGlinchey.

"He was banged up, so he wasn't able to start practice until this week, but he's been able to make it through all these practices," Shanahan said. "We had one Monday, and we had two [combined] on Wednesday and Thursday, so hopefully he'll have another good one today, and he'll be ready to go on Sunday."

By David Bonilla
Nov 28

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan jumped on a conference call with reporters on Monday, a day after the team's 13-0 win over the New Orleans Saints. He provided several injury updates from the game. Running back Elijah Mitchell suffered an MCL sprain in his left knee. The team initially thought it wasn't as severe as the MCL sprain he suffered in his right knee during Week 1, forcing him to miss seven games. The 49ers believed he might miss two or three weeks. That isn't the case, though. "It wasn't the news we were looking for," Shanahan said. "He'll be out longer than that. Most likely six to eight weeks." Mitchell will likely land back on the injured reserve list. Shanahan said the team hopes he can return sometime during the playoffs.

On Thursday, Arik Armstead declared that he expects to play on Sunday when his San Francisco 49ers host the Miami Dolphins at Levi's Stadium. "I'll be out there," Armstead told reporters. The defensive lineman isn't alone in believing he will be out there this weekend. "We're just excited to get him back," head coach Kyle Shanahan said this morning on KNBR's Murph & Mac show. "He's had a great week, so everything's trending, definitely, for him to play. So as long as we don't have any setbacks today, he should be out there. "He's been a guy that we've been missing a lot. It's a huge presence in there,

The San Francisco 49ers' streak of second-half shutouts continues. Although, it looked like that was in jeopardy a couple of times in the second half. Another streak ended after Sunday's 13-0 win over the New Orleans Saints. Head coach Kyle Shanahan couldn't say, "No injuries to report," something he had done in the previous three games. The 49ers lost two key players in the game. Running back Elijah Mitchell and guard Spencer Burford exited with injuries. Mitchell was ruled out with a knee injury, while Burford was sidelined due to an ankle injury. After the game, head coach Kyle Shanahan said Mitchell may have suffered another MCL sprain of his knee, but it's not believed to be as severe as the one he sustained in Week 1. However, he will likely miss some time.
